Born John C. Chapman, he was a prominent early baseball player and manager. Chapman played for the National Association Brooklyn Atlantics in 1874 and St. Louis clubn in 1875. He is best known for his 11-year managerial career between 1876 and 1892 with Louisville, Milwaukee, Worchester, Detroit, and Buffalo of the National League. He also managed the Louisville American Association team from 1889 to 1891. After his managing career ended, Chapman worked as a liquor saleman.
