Collection comprises correspondence, research materials (printed materials, interviews, legal documents, newsletters, notes, etc.), manuscripts and galley proofs, advertising and publicity, reviews and reader responses--materials generated during the research, writing and publication of these three works. The research files contain a wealth of data on the three disparate topics: American death rituals and funeral industry; the conspiracy trial of Dr. Benjamin Spock, civil disobedience and Vietnam-era jurisprudence; and the American prison system, criminal justice and corrections. Only a small amount of personal materials (which fall within the context of Mitford's activities as author of said books) form a part of this collection. Records of the East Bay Memorial Association (1954-1962), of which Mitford's husband Robert Treuhaft was an officer, are also included in Series I.

Correspondence (1917-1980) including family correspondence between Julius Eichel, his brother David Eichel, and their parents, while the brothers were imprisoned as conscientious objectors during World War I; writings by Julius Eichel including descriptions of his prison experiences during World War I, statements of his philosophy of absolute conscientious objection, and articles for various periodicals of the War Resisters League; personal memorabilia of Eichel and his wife, Esther Eichel; material relating to William James Sidis, an absolutist conscientious objector who corresponded and worked with Eichel before and during World War II, including periodicals edited by Sidis for organizations he started and articles written about him after his death; material relating to the Absolutist War Objectors Association and its newsletter (1943-1947) the Absolutist (earlier Weekly Prison News Letter); and writings of other conscientious objectors, clippings, and mail from other organizations. Correspondents include Ernest and Marion Bromley, David and Betty Dellinger, William N. Doty, David Eichel, Eichel family, Harold Fackert, Paul Comly French.
