Collections include the journal (1710-1719) of John Fontaine (1693-1767) and letters of the Fontaine-Maury family. Journal mentions military service and travels through Europe (1710-1713), an attempted trip to Virginia, a 1715 trip to Virginia where Fontaine traveled to Germana, Ft. Christanna and on Governor Alexander Spotswood's Trans-Montane Expedition. He also journeyed to New York City, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland. The journal was copied by Ann Maury in 1840 and includes letters re family matters and Virginia from Reverend Peter Fontaine (1691-1757), Mary A. Fontaine Maury (1690-1755), Peter Fontaine (b. 1721) and Reverend James Maury (1718-1769) to relatives in England. Also includes a few 18th and 19th century family letters. Persons mentioned in the journal and letters include Mr. Baylor, Mr. Beverley, Mr. Clayton, Philip Ludwell, Austin Moor, Andrew Freneau, Colonel Morris, William Fontaine Alexander, Edmund Fontaine, Matthew Maury, and William A. Maury.

Title: The newly discovered island, or, A myth! for old and young children, containing a history of toads and toad-stools [manuscript], 1851.

The collection consists of a bound manuscript with several watercolor illustrations; the story is carefully set in 1851 (1851 is written in contrasting ink throughout), and concerns three 'learned men' investigating an island in the midst of a lake in a 'vast track of uncultivated land' in Hampshire and Surrey. The explorers find a society of Natterjack Toads subsisting on various types of exotic fungi, which they use as boats, parasols, etc., and whose culture is described in some detail, often in in comparison to the Great Exhibition. Tipped in are seven watercolor illustrations and one line drawing, showing either the geography of the place or the toads and their mushrooms. Also pasted in are numerous textual additions or corrections. Faint pencil signature on the front fly-leaf identifies Mrs. Clayton, Farnborough, near Bagshot, Hants, possibly the author.

Photocopy of the journal of Mr Clayton's journey from Cania Station to England. He travelled to Port Curtis by horseback, sailed to Brisbane and then to London. Mr Clayton was manager of Cania Station, Upper Burnett District.
