On behalf of the town of Johnston (S.C.), Henry S. Hartzog, superintendent of the Johnston Institute, invites the Y.M.C.A. to hold its 1897 convention in Johnston. Stationery bears a letterhead for the Johnston Institute, a military boarding school.

This series contains the files of Henry Sims Hartzog, President of Clemson College, 1897-1902. Within the files are official correspondence from 1898-1899, September through 1899, an assortment of miscellaneous papers including information on the South Carolina Co-educational Institution, a military boarding school at Edgefield, South Carolina; various personal letters; biographical material that includes a personal sketch of Hartzog written by Samuel M. Martin, a professor of mathematics at Clemson College, a resume, and newspaper clippings chronicling Hartzog's resignation. Also included are two addresses given by Hartzog. The files document the history of Clemson College in the latter nineteenth century. Topics included in the letters concern admission of cadets, Hartzog's role as intermediary between parent and cadet, his role in daily operations, for example, accepting bids on printing jobs, hiring night watchmen, and purchasing bells for the Tillman Hall clock tower. The folders are arranged alphabetically. Material within each folder is arranged chronologically. Deteriorating paper has been photocopied onto acid-free bond for preservation.

Hartzog began creating this scrapbook in the 1940's. He included material related to his family history in South Carolina particularly events related to the Civil War. His memoirs describe his life and career. There are a number of published works by Hartzog which have been filmed as well as a "Biographical sketch of General Lewis Ayer" and "The Founding and Settlement of Bamberg."

The articles and clippings reflect and follow Anderson's career until his death in 1943. There are two articles written in 1978 that relate his exploits and retell the circumstances surrounding the introduction and courtship of Anderson with his wife, Lydia. The bulk of the correspondence is dated from around the years 1900-1901, when Anderson returned to Clemson after a year at the University of Minnesota. Correspondence between Anderson and Clemson College Presidents Hartzog and Mell are present, as well as Anderson's resignation letter in 1901. A letter dated October 27, 1933 details Alexander Pierce Anderson's wish to start a scholarship for Clemson students. Three photocopied photographs depict Alexander Pierce Anderson while taking part in the 1893 Gull Lake Expedition, a picture from the 1901 "Clemsonian," and a portrait of both Mr. and Mrs. Anderson. The two original photographs depict what appears to be a laboratory or classroom setting that is undated, and the Horticultural building at Clemson College dated July 1899. One file includes Anderson's patent entitled "Art of Treating Starch Material" dated August 26, 1902.

The incoming correspondence deals primarily with Tillman's senatorial years, 1894-1918. Included is correspondence from constituents regarding issues such as railroad regulation, race relations, the Dispensary Law, a variety of controversies with Presidents McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt, and the proposed repeal of tariffs on lumber from Canada; appointments to the military academies; and requests for positions in the federal and state governments as well as letters regarding positions at Clemson College. There is also correspondence regarding operations and construction activity at Clemson College, primarily from President Walter Marritt Riggs. Important correspondents include President Woodrow Wilson, Circuit Solicitor J. William Thurmond, Franklin Roosevelt, South Carolina Governors Miles B. McSweeney, Duncan C. Heyward, and Cole Blease, R.G. Rhett, Mayor of Charleston, Congressman James F. Byrnes, George Legare, Asbury C. Latimer, and William Jasper Talbert, and Clemson College Presidents Walter Merritt Riggs, P.H. Mell, and Henry S. Hartzog. There is also correspondence with his children Ben, Henry, and Sallie May. Most of the correspondence is of a political nature. The processor's notes identify the location of many prominent correspondents.
