The Fox family papers date from 1755 to 1969, and include correspondence, diaries, and miscellaneous materials. Correspondence is the largest group of records, and documents the early mercantile and political activities of some of the earliest Foxes to come to America, as well as the pioneering efforts of the lawyer Joseph Fox and his wife Hannah Emlem, who settled the town of Foxburg, Pennsylvania in Clarion County. Generations of Joseph and Hannah's descendants also resided on that land and the correspondence also addresses their experience. Three diaries written by Thomas Fisher, Joseph M. Fox, and Mary Rodman Fisher document the 1777 Quaker exile in Virginia, a politician's campaign for a congressional Democratic nomination, and a woman's daily activities respectively. Among the miscellaneous materials are indentures, estate papers, photographs and stereopticon cards.

The Fisher family papers center on Miers Fisher, with smaller sections of Jabez Maude Fisher, a brother, and other branches. The Miers Fisher section of the papers consists largely of incoming and outgoing correspondence and documents following Fisher's retirement from his law practice in 1793. It concerns family affairs and Miers' activities as agent for foreigners with business in Pennsylvania, but touches on other aspects of his life. Major family correspondents are: son Miers Fisher, Jr., 1797-1813, many of which are Miers, Sr. letters while Miers, Jr. was running a mercantile business in St. Petersburg, Russia; son Redwood Fisher, 1797-1825, 1848-1850, which includes letters from his father exhorting the boy to improve himself; brother Samuel Rowland Fisher, 1792-1817, with letters to Miers concerning family and some business; wife Sarah Redwood Fisher, 1777-1819, mostly letters from Miers reporting on trips away from home; brother Thomas Fisher, 1774-1806, on family affairs and a lot of sickness; son Thomas Fisher, Jr., 1791-1896, primarily letters from his father and other relatives while the younger Fisher was apprenticed to a Baltimore merchant; nephew Joshua Gilpin, 1792-1796, with personal notes and reports on English manufacturing, technology, public affairs. There are additional letters from miscellaneous Fishers, Gilpins and Redwoods. Other correspondents of Miers Fisher, writing from England, are: Maria Ann Dupont Aublay, 1792-1818, concerning the estate of herbrother Francis LeClerc Dupont and including personal news; Robert Barclay, 1775-1817, on trade, public events, and personal matters; James Delancey, 1784-1794, concerning the estate of William Allen; Jacob Duche, 1786-1793, on his American lands, with some mention of spiritual concerns; William Fisher, 1798-1819, about Tobyhanna, Pa. and other real estate in Northhampton and Wayne Counties; Elizabeth Galloway Roberts, 1804-1812, relating to her estate. There is also general correspondence, miscellaneous land and legal papers, and a draft of a portion of the "Journal of the Transactions of the Exiles." Miers' brother Jabez Maude Fisher went to England in 1775 where he died in 1779. Letters, 1774-1779, are primarily from his friends and acquaintances in England, with some letters from home. The correspondence is personal with frequent mention of the state of affairs between Great Britain and the colonies, with later letters being more concerned with commerce. Among the correspondents are Joseph Guerney and Robert Ormston. There are some very general letters, 1820-1865, to Jabez Maude Fisher [II], Miers Fisher's son. Miers Fisher's daughter Lydia married Benjamin Warner, a Philadelphia bookseller. Warner family papers include: Benjamin Warner incoming leters, 1810-1817, and Benjamin's letters, 1815-1821, to Lydia while on business trips through Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Lexington (Ky.), Richmond, etc. Benjamin died in 1821, and apparently his brother Joseph assumed paternal responsibilities for the children. There are several letters to Joseph from the nieces and nephews, particularly from John Warner, 1849-1851, while trying to establish himself in Pottsville, Pa. Joseph Warner's receipt book, 1830-1859, is largely for rent and taxes. There is Redwood Fisher Warner correspondence, 1830-1868, primarily school age letters from siblings and 1867 family news from sister Sarah Warner Lewis while "Red" and his wife are in Europe. Other Redwood Fisher related items are sister-in-law Jane Johnson receipt book, 1840-1884, for general expenses, and Ella I. Yardley estate accounts, 1870-1889, Joseph W. Johnson, Jr., and Redwood F. Warner, trustees of Mary S. Yardley. Finally, there is general correspondence, 1801-1829, of William Redwood and William Redwood, Jr., merchants.

The Logan-Fisher-Fox collection focuses on the members of three prominent Philadelphia Quaker families. The material offers a study of the minds and lifestyles of several generations of active members of the Society of Friends and is a valuable source of information on family life, highlighting the position of women in the family. There is much correspondence, especially in William Logan's and Thomas Fisher's papers, concerning trans-Atlantic trade and the Anglo-American Quaker community. The collection also documents the families' involvement in the anti-slavery movement, Indian relief efforts and educational projects involving both Indians and African Americans. The Logan section concerns James Logan, Secretary to William Penn, his eldest son, William and William's son, William Jr., an apothecary apprentice of Dr. Joseph Fry and medical student. William Logan's correspondence (approximately 200 items) reflect Quaker perspectives from both sides of the Atlantic on the growing conflicts between Great Britain and her colonies. Of additional interest is correspondence, 1763-1800, concerning the courtship and marriage of Sally Portsmouth and William Logan, Jr., which was discouraged by his family, and the guardianship of William Portsmouth Logan, their child, after the death of his father. The Fisher section includes 500 items of the Post-Revolutionary correspondence of Thomas Fisher, merchant and brewer, 1780-1810. In addition to business concerns Thomas Fisher's correspondence documents his active role in the formation of Westtown, a Quaker boarding school, his views on the Non-importation Agreement and free trade, and his interest in the education of Indians and the abolition of slavery. The William Logan Fisher papers document his apprenticeship in a counting house, and his later whaling business through extensive family correspondence. They are particularly useful for their commentary on the economy, politics, slavery and abolition. Also included here are the manuscripts of Sarah Lindley Fisher, second wife of William Logan Fisher, Elizabeth R. Fisher and Mary Fisher Fox important for their depiction of the life of the 19th century wife and mother. The Fox section focuses on the letters of Samuel and George to their brother Joseph M. Fox. Both Samuel and George graduated from medical school, but Samuel left the profession in 1828 to work in his father-in-law's New York counting house. Included in this section is a small group of Lindley family material, the bulk of which concerns Jacob Lidley, a missionary to the Indians. The Miscellaneous section includes photographs, newspaper clippings and other printed material.

The Jackson-Conard Family Papers include correspondence and other manuscripts of the Jackson and Conard families of London Grove Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The primary recipients are William Jackson (1746-1834), a Quaker minister, and his nephew, William Jackson (1789-1864), who served a single term in the Pennsylvania State Senate and was active in the anti-slavery movement.

Comprised predominantly of incoming correspondence of Quaker botanist and horticulturist, Humphry Marshall and his nephew, Moses Marshall. Two letter books kept by Moses Marshall in 1791 and 1793 provide a record of the Marshalls' responses to inquiries from clients seeking plants and seeds. Samuel Kramsh. These men were admirers and F/friends of Marshall's who exchanged specimens collected in distant parts of the country for native Pennsylvania species and species cultivated by Marshall in his garden. The unsuccessful search for wild Franklinia alatamaha is mentioned in three letters, while six letters outline plans for scientific expeditions to the west in the 1790's, mostly intended to involve Moses Marshall. While there is little in these letters to indicate the Marshalls' scientific. Abilities, per se, they help to delineate the complex network of family members, scientific associates and fellow Quakers used by the Marshalls to collect, sell and distribute plants. Morality of paying taxes during wartime (see Anthony Benezet and James Kenny), a letter relating to the North Carolina Regulator Insurrection, and one concerning the arrest and imprisonment of Quakers in Philadelphia as suspected loyalists. Finally, James Kenny's letters from the Pittsburg area, written in 1759-1760 provide an excellent account of plant collecting and life in the vicinity of Forts Pitt and Duquesne. A few letters concern Quaker doctrine and Quaker attempts to deal with the non-Quaker. World.

The first section consists of William Logan's business ledger (1752-1755) and Thomas Fisher's personal ledger (1806-1813). There are two boxes of chronologically arranged correspondence, financial papers, and miscellanea (1823-1895) of Theoma Rodman Fisher, his wife Letitia Ellicott Fisher, her mother Sara Ellicott, William Redwood Wright's mother Henrietta Hoskins Price, and his uncle William Redwood Price; and one box of account books and scrapbooks of Thomas Rodman Fisher's and Ellicott Fisher's and a remedy book of Letitia Ellicott Fisher. The correspondence is primarily between family members. There are eleven boxes of chronologically arranged correspondence (1870-1914) touching on William Redwood Wright's involvement in Philadelphia politics and clubs, and on his business matters; three boxes of receipts and accounts; and seven boxes of business papers, scrapbooks, invitations and miscellanea. There are three boxes of Letitia E. C. Wright's correspondence, the last one includes property and financial papers, and miscellanea. George W. Carpenter traveled abroad extensively after his first marriage and acquired a large circle of European friends. The correspondence with these friends constitutes a large portion of this section, as does other personal correspondence. There is one box containing a scrapbook, and a receipt book from the Wright Pike Co. The sixth section includes the correspondence of William Redwood Wright's generation. One box has the correspondence, business, and financial papers of Ellicott Fisher, Harvey Fisher, and Sydney Longstreth Wright and one box has those of Mary Rodman Fisher Carpenter, Sydney George Fisher, Charles Graff Wright, William Logan Fisher, Robert Kemp Wright, Jr., and Emlen Newbold Carpenter. There is a folder of miscellaneous family correspondence and one of William Redwood Wright's children. The last section of four boxes includes a small Autograph Collection assembled by George W. Carpenter with signatures from prominent American and European figures. There are also photographs, maps, land papers, genealogical material, train car brake diagrams, and copies of newspaper clippings and pamphlets transferred to the reading room.

The strength of this small collection lies in its documentation of the crisis afflicting American Quakerism during the antebellum period, particularly the deep rifts that developed in the meetings at Lynn and New Bedford, Mass., and the efforts there to suppress dissent.
