Title: Declaration signed by Harvard students to not speak in the vernacular for one year, 1712 August 23.

The declaration, handwritten in Latin and signed by members of the junior and sophomore class (Harvard Classes of 1714 and 1715), promises that the undersigned will not use the vernacular but instead "whenever, at meals, at banquets, ... in our rooms, in all our gatherings, wherever and whenever" will speak in Latin, Greek, or Hebrew through the next May. Additional Latin text appears on both the front and back of the document. The original is accompanied by a typed transcription and two partial handwritten translations. Note at top of original: "Script. Leonardo Dowding, Composit. a Tho. Foxcroft."

Title: Papers of Thomas Foxcroft, 1710-1714

Thomas Foxcroft (1696/7-1769) was minister of the First Church of Boston from 1717 until his death in 1769. He attended Harvard College as an undergraduate from 1710 to 1714 and studied a curriculum that emphasized Latin and Greek studies, and public discourse and syllogistic debate. The papers of Thomas Foxcroft consist of thin paper notebooks of theses and Latin lessons kept by Foxcroft while an undergraduate at Harvard College, as well as a Commencement thesis, and the salutatory and valedictory orations composed by Foxcroft for the July 7, 1714 Harvard Commencement ceremonies, where he graduated first in his class. The documents are written almost completely in Latin.

This collection includes a letter from Fayrweather, in Savannah, Georgia to Rev. Thomas Prince and Rev. Thomas Foxcroft, both of Boston, written May 25, 1748. Fayrweather provides a detailed account of the Bethesda Orphan Home founded by George Whitfield, including the positioning and architecture of the home, the surrounding grounds and orchards, and the service, work, prayer, and education of the students. The second item in the collection are sermon notes written by Fayrweather on the back of a list of people enrolled in Harvard College from 1642-1754. Fayrweather's name appears among the class of 1743.

The collection consists of writings, correspondence, documents, printed materials, photographs, and artifacts documenting the lives and work of Jonathan Edwards and his family. Jonathan Edwards' papers contain the great majority of his surviving manuscripts. These include over one thousand sermons; private theological and philosophical notebooks, including the nine volume "Miscellanies" and four volume "Notes on the Scripture;" Edwards'interleaved Bible. In addition, there is a box of Jonathan Edwards' correspondence; principal correspondents include Joseph Bellamy and Thomas Foxcroft. Other Edwards family papers include several of Timothy Edwards's sermon notebooks; correspondence belonging to Jonathan Edwards (1745-1801), Jonathan Walter Edwards, and Hannah Edwards Wetmore (principal correspondents are Calvin Chapin, Moses Tryon, Joseph Bellamy, Lucy Wetmore Whittelsey and Chauncey Whittelsey); printed material (chiefly numerous family Bibles) and a broadside Thanksgiving Proclamation by George Washington dated October 1789; photographs of Edwards family members; and papers relating to the history of the collection.
