Monroe sent Broadus a package of Religious heralds and a pamphlet "entitled War and peace. The papers contained articles by [Richard] Fuller and [William] Hooper "treating of the enormous evils of war. In the small pamphlet, an attempt is made to show how war may be prevented, and the inestimable blessings of peace secured. I prepared the pamphlet a few years ago consisting chiefly of extracts from the published writings of Franklin, Chalmers, Wayland, Spurgeon and others." In the pamphlet he suggested some methods to prevent war and secure peace. Monroe had sent Fuller a copy of the pamphlet "two or three years ago," but he had no way of knowing if they led Fuller to write the articles. "I have been in the ministry now almost fifty-two years ... before I go hence, I would rejoice to see the dawning of the day of peace promised in Isaiah 2 and Micah 4."

Letters from Joseph Caldwell, James Hogg, William Hooper, and James Webb to James and Walter Alves, Hillsborough, N.C., on a variety of subjects, including land division in Tennessee and Kentucky in 1798, the War of 1812, and the University of North Carolina, 1813-1825. Letters from others concern Hogg family genealogy and the Civil War. Items dated before 1861 are handwritten transcriptions. Civil War letters include a letter of Thomas Lenoir Norwood describing student life at the University of North Carolina in 1861 and not mentioning the war; two letters from Laura Norwood in North Carolina to her mother about raising troops and about sentiment for the war; a letter of Walter Norwood written in 1862 from Camp Lee near Savannah, Ga., describing camp life and speculating on Union tactics as federal troops moved toward Savannah; and a letter of Thomas Lenoir Norwood, written in 1863, from Richmond, Va., describing being wounded at Gettysburg, being taken prisoner, escaping and traveling through Union lines, and meeting with General Lee.

Title: Elisha Mitchell papers, 1816-1905.

Family correspondence, scientific notes, manuscript articles, and sermons of Elisha Mitchell, for many years connected with the University of North Carolina. Mitchell's correspondence pertains to his varied religious, academic, and scientific activities, including mountain exploration in North Carolina. Among the correspondents are George E. Badger, William Gaston, Francis L. Hawkes, N.M. Hentz, William Hooper, Levi Silliman Ives, Archibald D. Murphy, James H. Otey, John Stark Ravenscroft, and David L. Swain. Included is correspondence with the North family of Mitchell's wife, Maria North Mitchell, in New Haven, Conn., and from the Mitchell children after they had married and moved to Salisbury, N.C., California, and Texas. Volumes include Mitchell's diary, 1813-1816, begun at Yale and kept irregularly while he was teaching at various places in the North, containing mainly religious reflections and slight personal comment; his private notebook, 1818-1847, containing miscellaneous comments on mathematics, musicology, electricity, the natural sciences, and history, and personal accounts and notes on reading and letters received. The diary, 1878, of Mitchell's grandson, J.N. Howard Summerell, on a voyage to Scotland; Mitchell's journal, letter book, and account book, 1818-1842; and "Diary of a Geological Tour by Professor Elisha Mitchell in 1827 and 1828 with Introduction and Notes" by Kemp P. Battle, published as part of the "James Sprunt Historical Monograph Series" by the University of North Carolina in 1905.

Title: John DeBerniere Hooper papers, 1778-1911.

Papers of John DeBerniere Hooper consist of correspondence with his father-in-law, William Hooper, professor at the University of North Carolina, Furman University, South Carolina College, and president of Wake Forest University, and with other Hooper, Jones, and DeBerniere family members in North Carolina and South Carolina. Topics include politics, teaching, the University of North Carolina, and family news. Early papers, 1778-1798, provide information on the Forceput Plantation, located on the Cape Fear River outside of Wilmington, N.C. There are also letters, 1829-1830, from students at a female academy in Chatham County, N.C. Civil War era materials are sparse, but there are some documents that critique Civil War politics and an 1861 letter from a slave named Jerry, who had been hired out to serve students at the University of North Carolina. Later materials relate primarily to Hooper family history compiled by Frances DeBerniere Hooper Whitaker.

His papers contain biographical and family files, correspondence to his wife Frances Pollock Jones Hooper, 1834-35; his daughter Mary Elizabeth, 1834, his son-in-law John DeBernier Hooper, 1838, 1875; Marie J. Battle, 1867; and Elton Romeo, 1839. There are two diaries - the 1823 diary records his trip to Virginia and visit with Thomas Jefferson - the 1859-60, and 1862 diary entries are brief and refer to his teaching with his son in Murfreesboro, and Fayetteville. Pictorial materials include photographs of Hooper, and his grandfather William Hooper, the signer of the Declaration of Independence.
