Letter book, 1789 Jun.-1800 Apr., of William Kenyon of New York City, containing extensive outgoing correspondence to merchants, ships' captains, and associates in England, the West Indies, and other locations in the United States. Letters relate to various matters of interest to export-import merchants of the period, such as the various dangers facing merchant ships at sea, troubles with the French and French privateers, high insurance rates, supply and demand of important trade goods such as wheat, coffee, cotton, indigo, etc., the disposition and condition of individual vessels, the purchase or chartering of vessels, status of specific accounts with business associates, consignments, etc. Kenyon additionally refers to the 1798 outbreaks of yellow fever which plagued New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, the flight of citizens from these cities, and the resulting disruption to trade. Principal correspondents include: Alexander Brymer & Co., of Martinique; Daniel and William Brade, of Dominica; Thomas Backhouse, and George Blackman, England; Clark & Caldwell; Edward Cooke, London; Robert Copland; James C. and Samuel W. Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.
