Shaemas O'Sheel (1886–1954) was an Irish-American poet and critic. Born Shaemas Shields, he changed his surname to the more Gaelic "O'Sheel" soon after high school. He worked for the United States Senate (1913-1916) followed by employment with various newspapers, did publicity and advertising work, and was active in the Irish independence movement. He was "a very ardent Communist and a staunch supporter of the Soviet Union" (letter, O'Sheel to Young, April 17, 1938), though he disagreed vigorously with their foreign policy; as a result many of the usual Communist and radical outlets such as New Masses were closed to him. He published four books of poetry, and his work appeared in the New York Times, the New York Times Book Review, Harper's, and other national publications.

Jaffe, Louis I. (Louis Isaac), 1888-1950. Editorial correspondence files, M and N, of the Virginian-Pilot [manuscript], 1918-1954.
Title:
Editorial correspondence files, M and N, of the Virginian-Pilot [manuscript], 1918-1954.
The papers consist of the M and N series in Jaffé's correspondence files and contain correspondence with friends, other newspaper colleagues and Norfolk associates. Among the topics are the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot, particularly its syndicated features, book review and poetry column, and job enquiries, including requests on behalf of Shaemas O'Sheel and Wilbur Cash. Jaffé's civic activities, including his work on the Norfolk City Tax Commission, 1929, which studied the equity of the tax burden and his interest in Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences, and the Norfolk divisions of William & Mary and Virginia Union University; Jaffé's service on the American Red Cross Commission to the Balkan States; his fight to obtain a Negro bathing beach in Norfolk; and his interest in Virginia and national affairs. Of interest is a letter from Ralph McGill, re a Georgia con man, and correspondence with Kenton Foster Murray, on the Washington scene in the 1920s and 30s, particularly prohibition, Coolidge, Al Smith, and newspaper ownership of and cooperation with radio stations. Murray also mentions his sister Aline (Murray) Kilmer. National politics, particularly aid to World War II allies, is the theme of most of Francis Pickens Miller's letter. Other correspondents are Archibald MacLeish, George Walter Mapp, Don Marquis, William Shands Meacham, Julian Rutherford Meade, Robert Douthat Meade, Edwin Mims, Walter Alexander Montgomery, Robert Walton Moore, Samuel Mordecai, Henry Morgenthau, John Richard Moreland, Felix Morley and J.P.
