Letters in the first part of the book were all written by William Nelson between 1766-1772 and deal primarily with his business affairs. Included are letters to merchants giving account balances and receipts and invoices for goods sent and received. Also included are letters to ship captains concerning bills of lading for the Nelson's tobacco. Thomas Nelson begins writing these business letters in 1772 with William's illness and continues them after his father's death. Some of the 1772 letters deal with settling the estate and are signed by Thomas's brother Hugh Nelson. By 1774, Thomas writes to one merchant "poor America is greatly disrupted at this time" and subsequent letters occasionally refer to the turbulent political climate and its impact on trade.

The papers in this collection are largely those of Thomas Nelson (1738-1789), son of William Nelson (1711-1772). In addition to his duties running a large plantation, Thomas served the state of Virginia in many capacities including delegate to the Continental Congress, where he signed the Declaration of Independence, commander of troops during the Revolutionary War, and governor. The papers, primarily legal documents and letters concerning business or political affairs, reflect all phases of his life. Included are a legal document (1743) appointing a county clerk, two letters (1774) concerning payment for use of a lighthouse, a bill of exchange (1771) a letter (1780) to him reporting on the movement of British ships off the coast of Virginia, and two letters (1781) to the Virginia House of Delegates, regarding the "defense of his activities as governor." Also included are bills of exchange and other monetary agreements (1783-1787) made by Thomas's brothers Hugh and Robert Nelson.

Account books kept by Carter Burwell (1716-1756) and his son, Nathaniel Burwell (1750-1814), for their plantation, Carter's Grove, James City County, Virginia. One account book contains accounts of their neighbor, James Bray (d. 1744), who ran a tannery and shoemaking shop at his plantation; others contain accounts for the building of Carter's Grove. Also, a Book of Common Prayer and a Bible owned by Carter Burwell; four stud horse advertisements and a poster on pedigree and performance of the "late Eclipse." The accounts include names of James Anderson, Governor Norborne Berkeley, Baron de Botetourt, the Rev. John Bracken, Ann Burwell, Armistead Burwell, John Carter, George Charleton, Josiah Chowning, Mrs. Davenport, Dr. John Minson Galt, Governor William Gooch, Philip Grymes, Matthew Hubbard, William Moody, Hugh Nelson, John Norton, Dr. William Pasteur, Dr. John de Sequeyra, Richard Taliaferro, William Trebell, Robert Waller, Henry Wetherburn, Thomas Wharton, Ralph Wormeley, and many others.
