He went on to author the animator’s bible The Illusion of Life with Frank Thomas. His work includes Mr. Smee (in Peter Pan), the Stepsisters (in Cinderella), the District Attorney (in The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad), and Prince John (in Robin Hood). According to the book The Disney Villain, written by Johnston and Frank Thomas, Johnston also partnered with Thomas on creating characters such as Ichabod Crane (in The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad) and Sir Hiss (in Robin Hood).

He was the last living member of the celebrated "Nine Old Men" of Disney animation team whose work set the standard by which all character animation is judged. He created the character of Bambi and worked on numerous other Disney films, such as "Pinocchio" (1940),"Bambi" (1942), "The Three Caballeros" (1944),"Cinderella" (1950), "Alice in Wonderland" (1951), "Lady and the Tramp" (1955), "Sleeping Beauty" (1959),"The Sword in the Stone" (1963), "Mary Poppins" (1964),"The Jungle Book"(1967),"The AristoCats" (1970),"The Rescuers" (1977), and "The Fox and the Hound" (1981).</p>
