The letters and records also chronicle the hardships and dangers of frontier Kentucky, slave concerns, Kentucky economics, and politics. Correspondents include John May, George May, John Marshall, George Mason, Robert Morris, George Nicholas, Richard M. Johnson, Joseph Hamilton Daviess, Samuel Griffin, Robert Breckinridge, Basil Holmes, David Meade, James Mercer, David Ross, Robert Lewis, Henry Clay, Robert P. Letcher, and others. Possibly written in 1835, this letter from Ben Hardin is to a Mr. and Mrs. Chinn of Harrodsburg. Writing about the impending marriage of his son, James, to their daughter, Jane, Hardin proposes that the two sets of parents meet to discuss setting the couple up in housekeeping so as to insure the success of the union. Much of the letter pertains to Hardin's schedule of trips around the state and back and forth to Washington D.C.
