A dictation, partly in the handwriting of H.H. Bancroft. A letter by Deans to "Mr. Monteith," dated Uplands, May 12, 1878, is bound in as p. 9-12. Describes Fort Vancouver as it was when he arrived in 1853, the progress of settlement, the restrictions imposed by the Hudson's Bay Company in defiance of its charter obligations, the San Juan Island dispute, and the contributions of the Royal Engineers toward opening up the country.
