Sermons collection, 1640-1875.

Title: Sermons collection, 1640-1875.

The Sermons Collection contains over two hundred sermons and sermon notes, for the period 1640 to 1875, written mainly by Congregational, Episcopal, and Unitarian ministers in New England, New York, and South Carolina. The subjects generally are explications of specific scriptural passages with occasional sermons devoted to public fasts and historic events, such as the expedition of Gen. William Pepperrell (1696-1759) in 1745, and the death of Connecticut Governor Gurdon Saltonstall (1666-1724). There are also religious essays (e.g., "The Mystery of Godliness" and "Marks of Growth in Grace" (undated), and "On politics ..." written in 1735). Of special interest is a sermon written in the Mohawk language by an unidentified French priest of the Catholic mission near Quebec, Canada, in 1810, as well as a sermon fragment pertaining to the rights of American colonists, ca. 1770. There is also an octavo volume, kept by an unidentified minister, entitled "Treatises on the Attributes of God." Many of the sermons in this collection were written by notable clergymen, including Mathew Henry (1662-1714), Timothy Edwards (1669-1758), Edward Bass (1726-1803), first Episcopal Bishop of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, Jonas Clarke (1730-1805), and Samuel Langdon (1722/23-1797), president of Harvard College.

Materials relating to the ordination of Jonas Clarke to the church in Lexington, including call to the pulpit (May 19, 1755) by the freeholders and other inhabitants of the town, signed by Josiah Parker, town clerk; letter (1756 Dec. 15, encapsulated) from Jonas Clarke to Thomas Hancock ; four ms. sermons (1774-1788) of Jonas Clarke; account book (1749-1788) including record of marriages, books borrowed, and dealings in settling estates of various persons; letters from Clarke to his parents, brother, Thomas Clarke, and sister, Mary (Clarke) Cotton; three almanac diaries; promissory notes (1797, 1805); memorandum relating to Clarke's real estate (1823 May 19) and inventory of his real and personal property; ms. sermons; journals; facsimiles of typed copies of letters and wills (1780-1840) chiefly relating to Rev. Jonas Clarke and the Dane family; and other papers. Correspondents of Jonas Clarke include John Hancock, Rev. Perry Windsor, and Samuel Cooke.

Correspondence and other papers of the Rev. Henry Ware, Unitarian minister and Harvard professor, and his family. Correspondents include Ware's father-in-law, the Rev. Jonas Clark, daughter Lucy Clark Ware Allen, her husband the Rev. Joseph Allen, their children Mary Ware Allen, the Rev. Joseph Henry Allen, and Edward A.H. Allen. A short memoir written by Henry Ware and an 1844 diary kept by Edward A.H. Allen are included. Also included is a 1914 printed genealogy of Henry Ware's descendants. The bulk of the collection is correspondence relating to family matters, with some reference to religion and politics.

Title: Jared Sparks collection of American manuscripts, 1582-1843.

The Sparks collection consists of original and transcribed historical documents and correspondence, chiefly concerning the American colonies and the original thirteen states, collected or transcribed beginning in 1819 by Jared Sparks. The collection includes the papers of Sir Francis Bernard and George Chalmers, letters of Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, the Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington, the journals of Thomas Ainslie, the Board of Trade, the New York Provincial Congress and Conventions, as well as the papers and records from state public offices, among many others. The Sparks collection also contains his own historical essays and compositions, published articles, letter books, diaries, account books related to his college days, professional research, and material documenting his tenure as College president.
