This typescript copy was made by Brigham Young University from the original typewritten document and includes a table of contents and name index. Its contents come from a variety of sources such as early church documents, private journals, and correspondence to newspapers. Also inserted in full is a history of the county written by Albert Robinson Lyman, one of its earliest settlers and printed by him in the "San Juan Blade," a newpaper published at Blanding in 1917.

Typescript of William Wallace Hammond's autobiography, covering the years from 1837-1869. Begins with a brief account of his childhood and the death of his parents, and includes some references to his great-uncle Luther Very and guardian Walter Watson. Hammond briefly recounts his travels through New York and New Jersey in 1854, and his subsequent Army enlistment, which was enacted in exchange for cab fare. He writes extensively about the monotony of Army life during his time with Company I under Captain Delvua Davidson, as well as his desire to leave the Army and eventual discharge following Watson's intervention. Hammond describes his encounter with a Canadian fur trapper named John Cacota, who paid for Hammond's passage from Sioux City to St. Louis. He then writes of joining the Army teamsters bound for Utah, and how, upon losing his uniform and not having enough money for a new one, he left government employ and was commissioned by William Childs to drive an ox-team to Salt Lake City. Hammond briefly describes the sights seen along this journey, including Independence Rock. He describes in detail his nomadic life after leaving George W. Cohery's company, including his time making shinges at Parley's Canyon; farming at Little Cottonwood, Grafton, Cedar City, Parowan, and Springdale; teaching school at Kanarra; and building a schoolhouse near Sevier River under Jens Nielson in the 1860s. The autobiography ends with Hammond's marriage to Ruth Smith and the birth of their daughter. Included in the autobiography are references to General William S. Harney's treaty with the Sioux while Hammond was at Fort Pierre in 1855 and the arrival of General Sidney Johnston while the teamsters were near Ham Fork and Black Fork.

The typescript entitled "Preface to the writings of Kumen Jones" is a mixture of history, diary entries, reminiscences, and religious philosophy, covering the years from approximately 1878-1937. It is divided into several sections, and includes a history of the San Juan Expedition from 1878-1880; a description of Jones' transformation from cattle herder to missionary; a typed copy of an agreement for an Indian school in Bluff, Utah; a tribute to Indian agent and superintendent W.H. Shelton; descriptions of dealings with Navajos in Bluff; a brief history of the Norman conquest in Wales; an account of the terminal illness of "Aunt Mary" (Jones' wife Mary Nielson Jones); description of a trip from Salt Lake City to Mesa in 1935; Jones' funeral wishes; a record with descriptions of Jones' immediate family; and a brief description of Jones' stay in Los Angeles in 1932. The second typescript, "Tribute to Jens Nielson," extols Kumen Jones' father-in-law Jens Nielson, Bishop of Bluff from September 1880 to January 1906. Also included is a tribute to Lemuel Hardison Redd, Nielson's successor as Bishop from January 1906 to November 1910.

Lyman, Platte De Alton, 1848-1901. Journal of Platte D. Lyman, 1879-1894.

Title: Journal of Platte D. Lyman, 1879-1894.

Typescript of Platte D. Lyman's journal, kept from December 1879 until February 1894. It describes his involvement with the aftermath of the San Juan Expedition, including the drawing of lots for land, work done on the road through Hole-in-the-Rock, and the naming of Bluff City in 1880. Much of the journal describes Lyman's life in Bluff, where he worked on digging ditches to bring water for a permanent settlement. Lyman also describes his travels through Utah moving freight, driving cattle, visiting relatives, and bringing supplies back to Bluff. The journal includes accounts of his trips across the Colorado to Fillmore and Deseret, to the train station at Durango, and to Montezuma for supplies, as well as later accounts of his travels by rail to Salt Lake City and Provo, and finally Scipio, where he settled in 1885. Lyman frequently refers to the attempted theft of horses by both Indians (including a man named "Navajoe Frank") and "outlaws" (Lyman's brother, Joseph, was shot by horse thieves, which is also detailed in the diary). He also notes that many of the horses in Bluff were inexplicably going blind. Lyman also mentions his founding of a co-op store in Bluff with Jens Nielsen, Kumen Jones, Silas S. Smith, and L..H. Redd; a letter from Erastus Snow telling the Bluff settlers that they could leave the mission if they wished (Lyman notes that the tone of the letter suggested that anyone who left was "destitute of faith"); the overflow of the Cottonwood Wash in March 1884; and the breaking of the Lake Dam in February 1886. Lyman briefly refers to a collection of relics loaned to the World's Fair and sold to the Deseret Museum in 1894.

This typescript describes the process that Mormon pioneers went through in order to settle San Juan County. Particular attention is paid to the creation of the Hole-in-the-Rock Trail and the roles that Charles Hall, Silas Sanford Smith, and Jens Nielson (1820-1906) played in the Mormon emigration. Also detailed are the experiences of the Mormon pioneers as they endured the hardships of frontier travel.
