Correspondence between Rev. Daniel J. Jenkins and Mendel L. Smith re donations, also a printed letter and several pamphlets re the founding of the orphanage. Printed items include illustrated stationery and promotional brochures: Whirlwind Message by the Orphanage Man to the Citizens of Charleston both White and Black [ca. 1910s]; Answers to Inquirers of the Jenkins Orphanage, 1925 and 1927, with illustrations; and programme, Big Concert Company of 26 Boys and Girls [ca. 1920s].

Collection contains the records of Jenkins Orphanage including files on residents, correspondence, rolls, financial information, clippings, printed material, photographs, and miscellaneous items. Files on individuals admitted to the orphanage are arranged alphabetically and contain application forms, correspondence, school and health records, and in some cases photographs. Correspondence concerns the admission or refusal of admission of children, release of children from the orphanage, donations, and administrative and business matters. Correspondents include Rev. Daniel J. Jenkins, Rev. Paul G. Daniels, and city and county government officials. Notebooks contain rolls of girls and boys in the orphanage, menus for meals, and lists of food items and cleaning supplies. A bound volume (1891-1946) includes lists of names of the children, the terms under which they were admitted and the individual or agency placing the child, and a list of orphanage teaching staff and other personnel. Financial information includes reports of annual audits, accounts, invoices, and purchase vouchers. Printed materials include pamphlets about Rev. Jenkins and Jenkins Orphanage. Photocopies of clippings concern the orphanage, the Jenkins Orphanage Band, and the orphanage's 100th anniversary. Miscellaneous items include a constitution of the Orphan Aid Society, a report (1954) on the orphanage by the Charleston County Dept. of Public Welfare, photographs, a scrapbook, and materials used in an exhibit about Jenkins Orphanage at Avery Institute (Charleston, S.C.).

The collection consists of personal and professional papers reflecting Jenkins' career as a musician and composer, and encompasses four series: Personal and Professional Papers, Family Papers, Jenkins Orphanage Documents, and Research Material. The personal and professional papers contain letters from Jenkins to his father and stepmother, Eloise C. Harleston Jenkins, letters to Jenkins from friends and professional associates, including a letter from composer Will Marion Cook; family papers consisting of letters written to the family following Jenkins' death in 1926 and documents related to his death and the disposition of his estate; Jenkins Orphanage Documents including letters, programs and playbills, and financial papers; research material gathered by Jeffrey P. Green, the donor and author of EDMUND THORNTON JENKINS: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF AN AMERICAN BLACK COMPOSER, 1894-1926 (1982). The research material includes Green's correspondence and interviews with people who knew Jenkins, a listing from SACEM of the songs composed by Jenkins, photocopies of articles regarding Jenkins, the Orphanage, Jenkins family members and prominent musicians who had some sort of affiliation with the Jenkins Orphanage and the Band.
