Orphanage for African American children, founded 1891 by Rev. Daniel Joseph Jenkins and located at 20 Franklin Street; chartered 1892, the Orphan Aid Society acted as the governing board of the orphanage, but both names were used in fund raising; organized by members of Rev. Jenkins' church, the Society furnished much of the financial support for education and training; after Jenkins' death in 1937, his widow, Mrs. Eloise C. Jenkins, succeeded him as president of the orphanage for four years. She was succeeded by Rev. Paul G. Daniels, who served as president until 1961; the orphanage relocated to a 220 acre farm on the Ashley River in 1937-1938.
