Bulk of collection is correspondence among members of the Almy, Jackson, and Cabot families. The diaries and correspondence describe daily activities of individual women and the social network among upper-class Boston families. Civil War letters from Samuel Cabot, Jr., to his family, and courtship lettrs to Elizabeth Almy (1914-1916) are also included. Correspondents include Elizabeth Cary Agassiz, Charles W. Eliot, Ellen Tucker Emerson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Theodore Parker, and Charles Sumner. Also included is material on the Massachusetts Conference on Social Work, civil service in Massachusetts, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Mothers' Discussion Club, Monday Lunch Club, and other organizations.

Typescript reminiscences of Sarah Cabot Wheelwright, Boston socialite and philanthropist. Addressed to her daughter Mary, the 95-page memoir describes Sarah Wheelwright's childhood in Boston, Nahant, and Brookline, Mass.; social life in Washington, D.C. in the 1880s; and memorable events such as meetings with Ralph Waldo Emerson and Amos Bronson Alcott, with Charles Sumner, and with President Grover Cleveland. Wheelwright writes of her role in founding a nursing school at the Boston Hospital for Women and her organization of a women's club in Brookline called the Emery Bag. Throughout are comments on the Cabot family, particularly her brother, Dr. Samuel Cabot, and her parents, Samuel and Elizabeth Perkins Cabot, and Andrew Cunningham Wheelwright.

Records of the New England Emigrant Aid Company, organized to promote anti-slavery migration into Kansas following the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, contain letters (and typescript copies) written to its secretary, Dr. Samuel Cabot, regarding the supply of Sharps' rifles to the settlers of that state to defend themselves against the border ruffians. Also, a booklet containing a list of names and their contributions to a "Special Supplies Fund" for the supply of rifles. Correspondents include Martin F. Conway, Thomas W. Higginson, James Montgomery and Samuel C. Pomeroy.
