The series contains private letters from Quattlebaum's senatorial years (1935-1944) and documents fully his life from 1945 to 1964. Included in this material are Quattlebaum's activities as civic club officer, trustee of Queen's College, Charlotte, N.C., and Ruling Elder of Kingston Presbyterian Church in Conway, S.C. Although he retired from public life in 1945, Quattlebaum retained an avid interest in state and national politics, and kept up a lively correspondence with his former colleagues. He also communicated regularly with various government officials, genealogists, family members, and myriad acquaintances. Prominent correspondents include Edgar A. Brown, James F. Byrnes, Olin D. Johnston, J.C. Littlejohn, Kenneth Lynch, John C. McMillan, Burnet R. Maybank, Robert F. Poole, Frank A. Thompson, J. Strom Thurmond, Stanley F. Morse (President of the Grass Roots League, Inc.). Letters from Littlejohn and Poole are located in the Clemson College folders, and the Lynch correspondence is filed under Medical College of South Carolina.

McDowell Richards, president, Columbia Theological Seminary; nephew John Richards McCrae, a baritone with whom Richards performed; J.M. Ariail; Earle E. Morris, Jr.; R. Wright Spears; James ["Jamie"] Wyeth; and Richards' former students. Also includes two taped conversations recording Margarette Richards' recollections of family life in the S.C. Governor's Mansion.

Title: Blumenthal Family Papers

The Blumenthal Family papers (Collection 394) contain a large assortment of documentation of one of the most prominent Jewish families in North Carolina. The history of this family in Charlotte, North Carolina goes back to the 1920s, when Isadore D. Blumenthal (familiarly known as "Dick" Blumenthal) established the Radiator Specialty Company along with George G. Ray, his partner. As this company prospered, Blumenthal bought out his partner and then ran the company with his younger brother, Herman. With the wealth that they accumulated, they dispensed millions of dollars to a wide variety of charitable causes, and there is a great deal of documentation in this collection concerning their various charities. As devout Jews, the Blumenthals were active with their synagogue, Temple Israel, and were also interested in the history and the development of the state of Israel since 1948. There is a wealth of information in this collection concerning the Charlotte Jewish community, Judaism, the Holocaust, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, anti-Semitism, and Israel. One of their biggest and dearest projects was the establishment and development of the North Carolina Blumenthal Home for the Jewish Aged and also Fair Oaks retirement center. Both of these institutions were conceived, planned by the Blumenthals and financed mostly from their generosity; and there are many files in this collection about these institutions.

Title: Hugh Morton photographs and films: North Carolina places, 1930s-2005 (bulk 1940s-1990s) (Series 1).

Series 1 contains images of North Carolina landmarks, tourist attractions, businesses, schools, churches, and other locations. The images in North Carolina Places are from all eight decades of Hugh Morton's photographic career (1930s-2000s), with the bulk dating from the 1940s through the 1990s. Images depict specifically named/identified locations in North Carolina. Scenic images of unidentified locations are included under Series 3 (Nature and Scenic), while images related to Grandfather Mountain are arranged in Series 4 (Grandfather Mountain). With a few noted exceptions, all locations in Series 1 are either known or suspected to be within the state of North Carolina. Places that are either known to be outside North Carolina or whose location cannot be determined are arranged in Series 8 (Places, Non-North Carolina and Unidentified).

Jane Ross Hammer and Otho Bescent Ross collection, 1871-1987.

Title: Jane Ross Hammer and Otho Bescent Ross collection, 1871-1987.

Papers documenting the lives of Otho B. Ross, his wife Lucy Harris Ross, and her parents, Eugene and Lena Foust Harris. The Charlotte Philosophy Discussion Group and The Horace Williams Philosophical Society, both founded and sustained by Otho Ross are particularly stongly documented. There also is a collection of material relating to Williams himself, including letters from him, lectures by him, and a 1927 travel diary he kept. Ross's strong ties to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his wife Lucy's long affiliation with her alma mater, Queens College in Charlotte, N.C., are also well documented. Lucy and Otho's courting days and early relationship are documented by substantial correspondence, as are the courtship and marriage of Lucy's parents, Eugene and Lena Foust Harris. Also notable are pocket diaries, with sketches, that Eugene Harris kept as an art student in New York in early 1882, and a book of sketches by Harris including scenes from the University of North Carolina campus, perhaps from the 1890s. Otho Ross's medical career and Lucy Harris Ross's experiences as a music teacher are less well documented.
