Title: James H. Bradley Papers 1872-1877

James H. Bradley was a first lieutenant in the 7th Infantry Regiment, stationed at Fort Shaw and Fort Benton, Montana Territory. Bradley was an amateur historian who wrote about the history of Montana and the Northwest, and his own military career. He was killed at the Battle of the Big Hole, August 9, 1877. This collection consists of Bradley's writings, some correspondence, and miscellany. [Most of the writings were published in Vols. II, III, VIII, and IX of Contributions to the Montana Historical Society.

Title: James H. Bradley papers 1864-1879

James H. Bradley was a first lieutenant in the 7th Infrantry Regiment, stationed at Fort Shaw and Fort Benton, Montana Territory. This collection (ca. 1864-1879) consists of letters, writings, and clippings. Included are letters to Bradley's wife describing Missoula and Fort Missoula; materials concerning his wife's father, S.S. Beech, and his participation in the Civil War; and letters of condolence to Bradley's wife after his death in the Battle of the Big Hole. This collection contains two letters (August 1877) from James H. Bradley to his wife, Mary, shortly before his death. One letter is written from a camp site along the Big Blackfoot River close to Missoula, Montana Territory, describing the scenery, activites on the march, lack of Indians in the area, and the delay as Bradley had been ordered to wait for General Gibbon. The second letter, dated two days later, was written from Missoula and describes the town and fort, and Bradley's feeling that the campaign would end soon without encountering any Indians. The collection also contains letters written to Mrs. Bradley from family (James' father, E.D. Bradley) and from friends (Robert Fisk, P.B. Weare, I. Reed) following Bradley's death. Other correspondence (1864-1865, 1876) concerns Mary Bradley's father, S.S. Beech (Beach), his property in Atlanta immediately following the Civil War, and efforts to have his and other Southern refugees' return to Georgia paid for by the government. The collection also contains poetry (1870, n.d.) written by James Bradley, and miscellany, including unidentified hand-drawn floor plans and articles written about Bradley.

The diary records the march of the 7th Infantry, under the command of Col. Gibbons, from Fort Shaw to join Gen. Terry's campaign against the Sioux in the Yellowstone country, noting places, distances, road conditions. It recounts the news of Custer's defeat and describes the march to the site and burying the dead, the rescue of Maj. Reno, and the return to Fort Shaw.
