The papers contain manuscripts, correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, notebooks, and journals of Mrs. Smith, her husband, Seba Smith, and of their sons, Appleton Oaksmith, Sidney Oaksmith, Alvin Oaksmith and Edward Oaksmith. The literary papers include Seba Smith's column on Major Jack Downing and Solomon Swope, and reviews of his "New elements of geometry"; drafts and copies of numerous poems, short stories, essays and lectures by Mrs. Smith as well as manuscripts of her plays "Destiny," "Roman tribute," and "Old New York," sermons, 1877, from her pastorate of the Independent Church, Canastota, N.Y.; Edward Oaksmith's translations of Moliere's "Miser"; and manuscripts and clippings of poems and short stories by Seba, the sons and granddaughters. Letters and diaries discuss the publication of the Jack Downing letters and criticism of the geometry; Mrs. Smith's literary career and lecture tours; her efforts to vindicate Appleton from charges of slave trading brought by William H. Seward, Appleton's divorce from his first wife and the drowning of his four daughters in an 1879 North Carolina boating acident; the diplomatic careers of Appleton and Sidney in Nicaragua, Haiti, and Panama; Edward's religious meditations, conversion to Catholicism and Jesuit novitiate in France; Sidney's law practice and death at sea in 1869; and efforts of Mrs. Smith and her daughter-in-law Delfina Oaksmith to run boarding houses. Other topics inclue the "thermolume" cure, New England literary figures, current events, spiritualism, abolition, Mrs. Smith's interviews with Thurlow Weed and Andrew Johnson on behalf of Appleton, her campaign in behalf of a condemned woman, and her controversy with P. T. Barnum over unauthorized use of her name; and descriptions of life in Portland, Maine, New Mexico in 1885, and Lettsburg, Northumberland County, Va., 1884-1892. Of special interest is her eyewitness account of the 1863 New York City draft riot. The collection also contains a youthful diary, 1871-1873, of Elizabeth Oaksmith, photographs, and scrapbooks compiled by Augusta Oaksmith containing clippings re the family and their literary output. In a letter fragment, ca. 1873, Colesworthy discusses the Rev. Elijah Kellogg; living a Christian life; three "capricious women"; the unselfishness of John Neal; reminiscences of Portland, Maine; and living a Christian life. He requests a photograph of her for his collection which includes Neal, John Pierpont and William Cutter. In a letter, 1875 August 16, Colesworthy discusses the recently deceased Charles Holden, meetings with John Greenleaf Whittier and Oliver Wendell Holmes, John Neal's recent trip and health, Longfellow's poems delivered at Brunswick; the condition of the freedmen in the South, and publication plans; and compares the personalities of William Lloyd Garrison and Wendell Phillips. There are brief mentions of Thomas Todd, Seba Smith and Charles Parker Isley. In a letter, 1876 April 11, Colesworthy discusses his new book, his love of robins singing, the health of John Neal and William Lloyd Garrison, and Edward Richardson, Neal Dow, Charles Parker Ilsley and William Goold; and briefly mention Henry Wadsworth Longfellow suffering from neuralgia.

The Sparks collection consists of original and transcribed historical documents and correspondence, chiefly concerning the American colonies and the original thirteen states, collected or transcribed beginning in 1819 by Jared Sparks. The collection includes the papers of Sir Francis Bernard and George Chalmers, letters of Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, the Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington, the journals of Thomas Ainslie, the Board of Trade, the New York Provincial Congress and Conventions, as well as the papers and records from state public offices, among many others. The Sparks collection also contains his own historical essays and compositions, published articles, letter books, diaries, account books related to his college days, professional research, and material documenting his tenure as College president.

Stephens, and others concern authors and writing, payment for Neal's work, health concerns, slavery in the south, interpretations of poetry, comments about Portland, Maine, and thank-you letters. In addition, correspondence from the Sun Times in New York, the Boston Literary Gazette, and other publications write to Neal soliciting submissions. Also included in the collection are two dime novels written by Neal: Little Moccasin and the White-Faced Pacer, and several bound scrapbooks containing clippings of his work.

There are twelve, 3x2 inch, albumen prints, including 11 carte-de-visite portraits of family members by various photographers, as well as one view taken by Sidney of Havana, Cuba, each inserted in mounts within a commercial photograph album (New York, D. Appleton, 1862). There is slight fading of the photographs and some foxing of the paper mounts. Portraits include brothers Appleton, Sidney, and Edward; their parents, Seba and Elizabeth; Sidney's wife, Fannie, and their two children, Eva and Gertrude; Appleton's daughter, Bessie; and two others.

Military papers of Hillyer include district provost marshall reports; special and general orders of Grant, Sherman, Hillyer and others, especially one of congratulations on Port Gibson; passes; accounts; oaths of allegiance; and a receipt for Ulric Dahlgren's ring. Correspondence of Hillyer, his parents, children, and Grant chiefly pertains to the Civil War. There are discussions of the secession riots in St. Louis, and Grant's "Jew Order" of Dec. 17, 1862; a denial of Grant's drunkeness at Ft. Donelson; references to various services by blacks; and descriptions of the battles of Iuka, Holly Springs, Campbell's Station and Chickamauga, and of the Chattanooga campaign. Of unusual interest are a signed copy of Grant's letter to Simon B. Buckner demanding unconditional surrender at Ft. Donelson; a draft of a letter from Grant to Henry Halleck asking either relief from Command or full restoration to it; a letter of Grant's discussing his plans for the Vicksburg campaign; and a photocopy of Robert E. Lee's April 9, 1865, letter asking for a suspension of hostilities with a forwarding note by E.O.C. Ord mentioning Sheridan. Other Civil War papers concern a Union Army scout; a claim from a spy near Richmond who supplied information for Hugh Kilpatrick's Rappahannock raid; the military service of John H.H. Ward; the Senate investigation of George K. Leet; Hillyer's connection with Mann's Accoutrement Manufacturing Company; and a reunion of the Army of the Tennessee. Hillyer family letters include considerable correspondence between Anna Rankin Hillyer and Julia Dent Grant; and correspondence of Hillyer's father from Henderson, Ky., 1825-1833. There are impressions of a Mississippi voyage to New Orleans, 1834; Lafayette College, 1842; a temperance speech by Richard Johnson, 1842; Washington, D.C., 1868-1869, including Grant's inauguration, and visits to Johnson, Grant, and Hancock; and Sewanee and the University of the South, 1873. Additional items of interest include an 1870 letter from Horace Greeley mentioning Hillyer's Congressional nomination; a lampoon of Lew Wallace; and an account of how New York Daily News reporter Benjamin Wood scooped the news of Andrew Johnson's acquittal.
