The portion of the Emmet Collection housed in the Manuscripts and Archives Division consists of approximately 10,800 historical manuscripts relating chiefly to the period prior to, during, and following the American Revolution. The collection contains letters and documents by the signers of the Declaration of Independence as well as nearly every prominent historical figure of the period.

This collection contains the record book of the Institutio legalis of Newark, New Jersey, which mainly covers the years 1783 to 1817, with additional notations from when the society was revived in 1837, along with other notes and a membership list that were added by Joseph P. Bradley in 1891. Included in the record book are the original constitution and by-laws of the society, as well as its original membership list. However, the bulk of the volume is devoted to the particulars of the moot court cases in which the law students argued their cases, as well as the decisions issued by the moot court judge, followed by a brief performance review of the students.

Letters of Hoffman to his family. There are seventeen letters to his niece, Matilda Nicholas Whitman, and one letter to his half-sister, Ann Hoffman Nicholas. The correspondence deals with the literary and social life in New York and with the Hoffman family. Two of the letters have notes added by his father, Josiah Ogden Hoffman. Also, an engraved portrait of Charles Fenno Hoffman.

Harison, Richard. Letterbooks and catalog, 1790-1835.

Title: Letterbooks and catalog, 1790-1835.

Four letterbooks belonging to Harison and a catalog of his library (1790-1835). Letterbook for 1790-1800 contains mostly copies of letters to Cabinet members and other government officials with reference to his work as U.S. attorney for the district of N.Y., giving and seeking opinions on legal problems of the new federal government. The remaining volumes consist mostly of matters relating to his own and his clients' land holdings and also correspondence from his work as a private attorney. After Harison's death in 1829, the last letterbook was used by the executors and trustees of his estate, primarily his son William H. Harison. The library catalog (ca. 1796) gives the name of the book, author, number of volumes, and size, listed alphabetically.

Correspondence from, to, and between the family members of Maria Fenno Hoffman, daughter of John and Mary (Curtis) Fenno of Boston and Philadelphia, and wife of Josiah Ogden Hoffman of New York. Included are letters from John to Mary Fenno, correspondence between the nine Fenno children, and among Maria Fenno Hoffman, her husband and three children. The Fenno sons in particular traveled widely, and there is information in the collections about social and economic conditions in St. Augustine, Florida. South Carolina, Georgia, and, in particular, New Orleans.
