Title: Robert Hiester Montgomery Collection of Business Papers, [ca. 1600]-1945.

Letters and documents, the majority written between 1700 and 1900, dealing with both personal and corporate business and financial matters, assembled by Montgomery. The letters are chiefly by American and English writers. Many of the American letters are to and from various United States Treasury officials, usually the Secretary of the Treasury. Of the 107 letters by Joseph Anderson (1757-1835), U.S. Senator and jurist, the majority are written to Samuel Swartwout (1783-1856) when he was Comptroller of the United States and Collector of the Port of New York. Most of the documents are American with New York City firms predominating. In addition there are English, French, and Spanish items. A number of the 17th century English documents are stamped "Clayton Manuscripts," referring to Robert Clayton, a trustee of the George Villiers Buckingham estate. The range of materials includes the accounts of English nobility, some government-related accounts, real estate holdings, bills of sale, receipts, customs declarations, and other documents relating to ships and shipping, banks, and a variety of firms, large and small. For example, there are twenty five documents relating to the China tea trade of Oliver Wolcott, 1795-1811; financial accounts for two voyages of the ship MARRY MARGETTE, 1610-1614; the 1792-1795 accounts of the Duchess of Abrantes; the accounts of the Montezuma y Vivero estates in Mexico, 1664-1724; two boxes of shipping invoices, and customs declarations; and materials documenting thirteen cases handled by the U.S. National War Labor Board, 1943-1944.

Letters and miscellaneous items collected by historian Arthur C. Bining of Philadelphia. About one-third of the collection is made up of letters, 1804-1844, which originally formed part of the correspondence of the United States Customs House of Philadelphia, dealing with routine custom matters and addressed to the Collector of Philadelphia. Major Custom House correspondents are: Joseph Anderson, William H. Crawford, Alexander James Dallas, George Mifflin Dallas, Henry D. Gilpin, Charles J. Ingersoll, Jared Ingersoll, Joseph R. Ingersoll, William Morris Meredith, John Meredith Read, Jonathan Roberts, Richard Rush, and Henry Miller Watts. About one-fourth of the collection consists of the papers, 1787-1812, in French, of Joseph R. E. Bunel, Paymaster General of the French colony of Santo Domingo [Haiti], and Marie F. M. Bunel, a businesswoman in Santo Domingo. In 1804, following the successful Haitian revolution, the Bunels moved to Philadelphia. Included are their incoming personal and business correspondence and a few miscellaneous financial records. The remainer of the collection contains letters by James Barker, 1814-1815, army officer and agent for fortification, Philadelphia; William Shaler, 1807-1832, United States Consul-General to Algiers and Cuba, and commissioner in the negotiation of the United States-Algiers treaty of 1815; Henry Stanton, 1843-1848, army officer; Abbot H. Thayer, 1876-1897, painter and naturalist; Edward Thursby, 1803-1819, merchant of Philadelphia; and James Trimble, 1809-1835, Pennsylvania political figure. There are also a few miscellaneous papers, 1853-1896, of August F. W. Partz, a German immigrant and inventor; papers, 1877-1878, relating to efforts by producers and carriers of anthacite coal in Pennsylvania to limit production and control prices; and a miscellanea of letters, business papers, deeds, military discharge papers, etc. by various persons and firms.

There is a letterbook/accountbook of 347 p., 1790-1856, containing 466 draft copies of his commercial and social correspondence with shipping agents in Great Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, Holland, Germany, China, Canada, as well as in the United States. The correspondence concerns Bell's business arrangements, the various cargos he shipped and their disposal, political affairs affecting the shipping trade, laws and treaties of various countries to be dealt with, taxes, embargoes, piracy, threats of war, and other pertinent events A second account book of 84 p. (many are blank), 1787-1852, for the Ship Stephania and others contains ships' records for 1799 to 1828 and miscellaneous accounts up to 1857. There is a one volume carbon typescript (113 p.) of genealogical notes and reminiscences by Gordon Knox Bell (Regent of the University of the State of New York and grandson of Isaac Bell) and others, ca.1940. There is also an essay and lists of the residents of Greenwich Street (including the Bell and Rogers families) by Elizur Yale Smith with related correspondence, 1940.

Letter book containing handwritten copies of letters sent 1807-1815 by Henry Hawkins. There are also letters, 1816-1824, by Hawkins's son George, also of Philadelphia, Pa., and an index of correspondents. Letters are to persons in Tennessee, Georgia, and elsewhere concerning the estate of John B. Evans (d. 1805). The estate was comprised of extensive land holdings, plantations, and lead and iron mines in Tennessee, as well as land holdings in Georgia. Most of Henry Hawkins's early letters are to attorneys and intermediaries inquiring as to the progress of collecting debts owed to the estate. Other letters deal with payment of taxes on the estate's land holdings, the sale of farm equipment and King's notes owned by the estate, and attempts to prevent settlers from inhabiting the estate's land. Throughout, Henry Hawkins expressed a desire to bring the settlement of the estate to a close. George Hawkins's letters are similar in subject, although more focused on debt collecting. In some letters, George Hawkins expressed suspicions that some intermediaries entrusted with the sale of estate properties had used the profits for their own personal use. Correspondents include attorneys Charles H. Porter, marshal of the United States for the Eastern district of Tennessee, and John McCampbell, both entrusted with the administration of the estate's properties in Tennessee. Other correspondents from Tennessee include attorneys Jenkin Whiteside and Joseph Anderson, both of whom later became United States Senators. Correspondents from other areas include James A. Bayard (1767-1815), United States Senator from Delaware; Samuel Hughes of Hagerstown, Md.; Josiah Collins of Edenton, N.C.; James Murren of Augusta, Ga.; and Joseph Anthony of New Orleans, La. Intermediaries and others mentioned in the letters include General James Winchester, Samuel Jackson, and Colonel Alexander Outlaw.

The United States Sanitary Commission established the Army and Navy Claim Agency (ANCA) in Washington, D.C. on April 1, 1864 to serve as the USSC’s central office to assist Union soldiers, sailors, and their families in prosecuting claims on the federal government for pensions, back pay, bounty, commutation of rations, prize money, and other benefits, without cost. The Army and Navy Claim Agency Archives comprise the records of the Army and Navy Claim Agency; the records of the Pension Agency, its predecessor organization; the registers and cash books of its subsidiary local agencies; and the records of two quasi-independent USSC claim agencies whose origins predate the establishment of the Army and Navy Claim Agency: the Protective War Claim Association of the State of New York, located in New York City, and the Protective War Claim and Pension Agency, located in Philadelphia.
