Sitwell was a poet, critic and author of volumes of verses. He died in 1988.
Sacheverell Sitwell was an English author and critic. Born into an aristocratic and gifted family, he joined with his brother Osbert and sister Edith to help change the tastes of British society in art and literature, publishing the poetry magazine Wing and organizing art exhibitions that introduced Picasso and Modigliani to the British public. An author, journalist, art critic, publisher, traveller, and public servant, he is probably best remembered for his works on art and travel. He was also an accomplished poet, and wrote books on many diverse subjects.
English poet; d. 1988.
English author.
The brother of Dame Edith Sitwell and Sir Osbert Sitwell, Sacheverell Sitwell was a poet, art critic, and a writer on architecture.
"For Geoffrey Elborn from his friend Sacheverell Sitwell 17 January 1973" Texts exhibit handwritten changes. Purchase; Paul Rassam; 1994.
English writer.
Sacheverell Reresby Sitwell was the third child and second son born to Sir George and Lady Ida Sitwell. Born at Scarborough in November 1897, "Sachie" suffered less from the expectations of his parents than his older siblings and was doted upon by the whole family. When he began school in 1908, he attended St. David's, Reigate, and then Eton.
Between 1912 and 1915 the Sitwell family was preoccupied by legal issues resulting from Lady Ida's debts, and Sacheverell suffered a great deal of emotional stress over her eventual imprisonment. World War I also loomed large in Sitwell's life as his brother, Osbert, and many of their mutual friends were shipped to the Front. At the age of seventeen Sitwell sought escape in aesthete attitudes and indulgences, running up debts to purchase books, pottery, and Japanese prints. He maintained these habits of escapism and living beyond his means throughout his life.
Sitwell left Eton at the end of 1916 and early the following year he joined the 5th Reserve Battalion, the Grenadier Guards, stationed at Chelsea Barracks in London. Lacking any aptitude for mechanics, horses, or leadership, Sacheverell made a poor soldier. However, while recovering from a bout of jaundice, he wrote several poems for his sister's magazine Wheels . Edith Sitwell had early detected Sachie's "poetic nature" and encouraged him to write. In 1918 his first volume of poetry, The People's Palace, was privately published but received very little notice.
Freed from the military early in 1919, Sitwell entered Oxford as an undergraduate of Balliol but left without taking a degree. He spent the next several years traveling, writing poetry, and making a start on what would become Southern Baroque Art . He worked with Edith to produce the performance art piece, Façade, and in 1922 Sitwell published The Hundred and One Harlequin, the first collection of his poetry to be published by the general publisher, Grant Richards. Southern Baroque Art, the prose work with which he would most often be identified, was published in 1924. Unlike Sitwell's poetry, which had so far been criticized as technically adept but obscure and lacking focus, Southern Baroque Art received praise all around. It also marked a personal transition for Sitwell, who went from thinking of himself as a poet to considering himself a writer.
In addition to being a successful literary year, in 1924 Sitwell met and fell in love with his future wife, Georgia Doble. They met at a dance. Sachie pursued Georgia assiduously for a year before she would agree to become engaged. They were married in Paris on October 12, 1925. Their first son, Reresby, was born in 1927 and his younger brother, Francis, in 1935.
Over the next several decades Sitwell produced a wide variety of literary works. He wrote one volume of short stories, several books on art, and two biographies. Developing a passion for British architecture, Sitwell published British Architects and Craftsmen in 1945, and four travel books between 1948 and 1956. He did not publish any more poetry until 1948 when Selected Poems, edited by Edith and Osbert Sitwell, came out. It was warmly received by critics. Sacheverell had no real desire to be brought into the limelight which was once again focused on the Sitwell Triad, however. While Edith and Osbert made international tours and promoted their works with vigor, Sacheverell stayed home on the Weston Estate, or traveled research new volumes.
The death of Edith in 1964 devastated both Osbert and Sacheverell and Osbert's death in 1969 was another serious emotional blow. However, it also served to release Sacheverell finally from the familial dependence he had always felt, financially and emotionally, and allowed him to make a sort of peace with the memory of his brother; this despite Osbert having left the larger part of his estate to Reresby. Enough of the estate went to Sacheverell to allow him to live out his days in relative wealth. Georgia died in 1980. Two years later, Sacheverell published his final volume of poetry, An Indian Summer . He was made a Companion of Honor in 1984 and died in 1988.

Benjamin Ivry collection of correspondence on Pavel Tchelitchew, 1981-1982.
Twenty-seven letters and postcards by various authors to Benjamin Ivry. The letters document Ivry's research for a planned catalogue raisonné of Tchelitchew's paintings. Most of the correspondents are collectors who owned Tchelitchew's paintings. The letters discuss the location and history of particular works as well as the correspondents' recollections of Tchelitchew. One letter, from Allen Tanner, discusses his and Tchelitchew's relationships with Gertrude Stein and Bravig Imbs in Paris in the 1920s.

Title:
Serge Koussevitzky Archive 1920-1976 (bulk 1924-1951)
The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.

The Works series is composed of page and galley proofs for all five volumes of Sitwell's autobiography, LEFT HAND, RIGHT HAND. Title:
Letters, 1917-ca. 1957.
The 12 letters of Augustus Edwin John were written in two different periods of his life. Four are on letterhead with his Chelsea address, where he lived from 1914 to 1927. The others are on the letterhead of his Fryern Court, Fordingbridge residence, where he lived from 1927 to his death. John sends the publisher Unwin the requested photograph (1917 June 14). He writes to William Rothenstein that he likes the price a collector offered for a portrait, but he believes that "Cockerell should have it for his museum" [Liverpool National Gallery; ca. 1918]. A short note to a friend (Foster?) schedules a meeting at the club (ca. 1917-1920). The artist informs a captain Sunderland that he may publish photographs of his Canadian studies, which are with Chenil & Co. in Chelsea (ca. 1920-1924)

James Lees-Milne papers, 1907-1997
Title:
James Lees-Milne papers 1907-1997
The James Lees-Milne Papers contain correspondence, writings, and other papers of the author. The papers span the years 1907-1997, with the bulk falling between 1930-1997. Series I, Correspondence, is the most extensive, and documents Lees-Milne's relationships with a wide circle of close friends, social and literary acquaintances, publishers, the National Trust, his family and his wife's family. The majority of correspondents are members of the British aristocracy and of Britain's literary elite. Among his most frequent correspondents were John Betjeman, John Spencer Churchill, Patrick Kinross, Edward Sackville-West, Sacheverell Sitwell, James Pope-Hennessy, Harold Nicolson, Rosamond Lehmann, Anne Hill (Lady Anne Gathorne-Hardy), Diana (Mitford) Mosley, Eardley Knollys, John Kenworthy-Browne, Richard Stewart-Jones and Stuart Preston. Other correspondents include Ivy Compton-Burnett, Elspeth Huxley, Lady Kathleen Kennett (widow of Admiral Scott), Alan Pryce-Jones, his literary executor Michael Bloch, and many other literary friends, nobility, and prominent figures in the arts. Series II, Writings, contains manuscripts, contracts, background research material, and reviews of Lees-Milne's published diaries, writings on architectural history, biographies, novels, memoirs, and shorter works such as magazine articles and obituaries. Manuscripts for the earlier diaries are not present; for 1946-47 and 1953-78, there are corrected typescripts that contain material not included in the published versions. The most extensive background material is for Lees-Milne's two-volume biography of Harold Nicolson: this includes a small body of Nicolson's correspondence to his secretary, business associates, several friends, including Leonard and Virginia Woolf, and his wife Vita Sackville-West. Background material for Lees-Milne's The Age of Inigo Jones includes one of the pocket notebooks he carried with him on visits to National Trust properties in the 1940s. Series III, Other Papers, contains certificates, invitations, a list of books read 1962-96, ephemera, which includes a bookplate showing the Lees-Milne coat of arms, and clippings. The majority of the clippings are obituaries of Lees-Milne's friends and family, but also present are interviews with and profiles of Lees-Milne himself, articles about the National Trust, about architecture and historic preservation, and about friends. Series IV, Photographs, contains snapshots of Lees-Milne and his family and friends from his childhood through the 1980s.

Arland Ussher correspondence, 1921-1959.
This collection of selected correspondence of Arland Ussher, philosopher, art critic, and Gaelic scholar, consists largely of over 200 letters between Joseph Hone, Irish critic and biographer, and Ussher. In addition there are letters from Edmund Blunden, Austin Clarke, Oliver St. John Gogarty, Jack Grene, Augustus John, William Kirkpatrick Magee, Sacheverell Sitwell, and Robert N.D. Wilson. The correspondence refers to philosophy, including that of Swift, Berkeley, Hegel, and Kant, the works of Joyce and Shaw as well as books by Ussher himself, including Face and Mind of Ireland. A typed copy of Yeats's "Crazy Jane and the King," which Ussher apparently intended to discuss in one of his books, is housed with some of the letters between Gogarty and Ussher. In addition, the holdings contain a 1953 letter from Ussher to Mr. Spicer-Simson about the latter's photographs of Ussher's medallions of Joyce, Shaw, and Yeats.

Title:
Allanah Harper Papers, 1931-1993.
The bulk of Series I., Allanah Harper, is made up of incoming correspondence, but the collection does include seventeen outgoing letters. Harper's incoming correspondence is comprised of letters from her friends, her mother, and various scholars. The greatest quantity of letters are from Sybille Bedford, Harper's close friend, and sometime financial supporter. These letters, which are personal in nature, date from 1946-1991, bulking in the 1950s to 1970s. Some of the other correspondents represented in the approximately 500 letters gathered here are: Cecil Beaton, Jane Bowles, Ivy Compton-Burnett, Lawrence Durrell, T.S. Eliot, Martha Gellhorn, Victoria Glendinning, Brian Howard, Peter Quennell, and Sacheverell Sitwell, among others. Also present are letters and contracts with the London literary agency David Higham Associates, Ltd., relating to Harper's contributions to a book project on her friend Edith Sitwell. There are also several folders of unidentified correspondence, which have either incomplete names or indecipherable signatures. Harper's manuscript of her autobiography All Trivial Fond Records is present, along with some manuscripts and notes for a few short works. Series II, Sybille Bedford, is comprised primarily of incoming correspondence to Sybille Bedford, but also contains some outgoing correspondence, and two manuscripts relating to the work of Aldous Huxley. Her outgoing correspondence is primarily to her longtime friend, Eda Lord, during the 1970s. Incoming correspondence from Anna Bernhardt, Bedford's maternal grandmother, is extensive, numbering 168 letters (40 in German) and dates from 1933-1937.
