Papers of Albert Maltz (1908-1985), a novelist, playwright, screenwriter, and blacklisted member of the Hollywood Ten. The collection emphasizes his screen writing and consists of variant drafts for early successes ("Destination Tokyo," "Pride of the Marines," and "This Gun for Hire"); later works for which he received no credit ("Broken Arrow" and "The Robe") or from which he was fired ("Exodus" and "The Execution of Private Slovik") because of the Blacklist; and numerous unproduced titles. Work for the Theatre Union during the Depression is documented by script drafts (primarily of unproduced plays) and microfilmed clippings. General writings include microfilmed clippings about his short stories and novels, and speeches and statements, many of which concern the Hollywood Ten and related political issues. Also about the Hollywood Ten are minutes and information pertaining to meetings, legal and public relations materials, and recordings of memorial services for Herbert Biberman and Adrian Scott. Papers of H. J. Biberman, a stage and screen producer-director-writer and his Academy Award-winning actress-wife. The collection concerns their professional careers as well as Independent Production Company vs. Loews et al., the anti-trust litigation which resulted from Biberman's attempt to mitigate the blacklisting he experienced as one of the Hollywood Ten. Documentation about the Hollywood Ten is limited, although there are autobiographical references to this period, some records of the Committee to Free the Hollywood Ten, the film The Hollywood Ten, and personal letters written by Biberman while he was imprisoned for contempt of Congress.

Records of the Packinghouse Workers Organizing Committee (1937-1943) and the United Packinghouse, Food and Allied Workers (1943-1968), organized first as a CIO affiliate, the United Packinghouse Workers of America (UPWA). Included is correspondence, by-laws, convention proceedings, executive board minutes, organizers' reports, contracts and negotiation records, grievance files, speeches, arbitration records, research files, and publications. The records document internal union affairs; issues relating to national politics, civil rights, women's rights, and workplace discrimination; labor legislation; relations of the international with local unions; relations with employers and government bodies such as the National Labor Relations Board; national strikes; master contracts; and merger in 1968 with the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America. Specific files within the collection concern the Sugar Division, representing workers in the sugar industry in the U.S. and Puerto Rico; organizing activities in canning companies; farm-labor relations; the Armour Automation Fund Committee which addressed the problem of displaced workers; and 1959 investigations of the union by the House Un-American Activities Committee. Papers of a psychologist who collaborated with the blacklisted Hollywood writer/director Herbert Biberman in his writings from 1964 until his death. Included are variant scripts for the motion picture Slaves (1969) and other projects on which they worked together, primarily romantic correspondence exchanged by Biberman and Sherman (although largely from Biberman to Sherman), a brief memoir by Biberman including comments on his Hollywood Ten imprisonment, recorded readings by Biberman and Sherman, a home movie of them, and poetry by Biberman, mainly 1964-1971.

Lucille Lortel papers

Title: Lucille Lortel papers

The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files.
