Correspondence forms themajority of this collection, ranging from 1897, with Julian Sorell Huxley (JSH)and his grandmother Henrietta exchanging letters, to 1994, shortly before thedeath of Lady Marie Juliette Huxley (MJH). The correspondence not only includesletters from Huxley family members and many twentieth-century intellectual,social, and cultural leaders, but it also provides extensive information aboutJuliette Huxley and her myriad activities. Also included in the collection iscorrespondence to and from Aldous Huxley, the majority being from Aldous to hisbrother Julian. Of particular interest are some very early juvenile writings ofJSH, written in 1895, 1897, and 1904.

Derek Freeman Papers, 1940 - 2001

Title: Derek Freeman Papers, 1940 - 2001

Papers of Australian anthropologist Derek Freeman. The collection documents the research and publication career of a prominent Australian anthropologist; his correspondence with Australian, British and American colleagues; and, the scholarly debates that he sparked with his critical analysis of Margaret Mead's research in Samoa. Freeman was trained in the tradition of British social anthropology, but sought a synthesis of human biology and cultural anthropology throughout most of his career. The collection at present represents better this later turn in Freeman's thinking. Freeman performed three major field studies, two (1940-1943 and 1966-1968) in Western Samoa and one in an Iban village in Borneo (1949-1951). The collection contains only scant documentation of the Iban study, but contains all of Freeman's research materials and notes from his Samoan studies. In addition to manuscript drafts of Freeman's articles and books, the collection includes his comprehensive files of popular press and academic discussion of his books MARGARET MEAD AND SAMOA (1983) and THE FATEFUL HOAXING OF MARGARET MEAD (1999), and the documentary film, play, and papers this controversy sparked. The papers also contain abundant general topical notes, files from Freeman's documentation of the Daniel Nicholl's murder case, and photographs of people and places in Samoa.

Julian Sorell Huxley papers

Title: Julian Sorell Huxley papers

The collection documents Huxley's role as a synthesizer and educator who influenced thinking in many areas, including studies of taxonomy and relative growth, pioneering work in ethology, and important writing in the early twentiety-century synthesis of Mendelian genetics and Darwinian theory. His belief that evolution was not only biological but social and cultural as well led to interests in eugenics, population control, conservation and humanist movements. Linking scientists, science and other fields and science and the public, Huxley corresponded with such scientists, artists, writers and social figures as Kenneth Clark, J.B.S. Haldane, H.J. Muller, Bertrand Russell, Stephen Spender and H.G. Wells. Other materials found in the papers include original writings, publications of others, organizational, conference and travel materials, personal diaries, photographs and memorabilia. Correspondence forms approximately one-third of the papers. It exemplifies the shape of the collection as a whole in that its volume increases steadily from the early years onward, peaking in the 1950s and 1960s and diminishing sharply during the times of Sir Julian's depressions. The most substantive part of the collection, the correspondence, not only includes letters from many twentieth-century intellectual, social and cultural leaders, but also provides the most information about Sir Julian and his myriad activities. Sir Julian's own writings -- published and unpublished - comprise another one-third of the collection.

The Helen and Kurt Wolff Papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts, printed material, and personal papers documenting the professional lives of Helen and Kurt Wolff through their affiliations with Kurt Wolff Verlag, Pantheon Books, and Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. Series I, Correspondence, consists predominantly of professional correspondence with authors, publishers, and translators, though correspondence can also be found with friends, editors, literary agents, periodicals, and organizations. There are authors' files for Joy Adamson, Hermann Broch, Max Frisch, Günter Grass, Julien Green, Donald Harington, Uwe Johnson, Carl Gustav Jung and his editor Aniela Jaffé, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Konrad Lorenz, Jan Morris, Iris Origo, Amos Oz, Boris Pasternak, and Georges Simenon. Other noteworthy files exist for Hannah Arendt, Kurt von Faber du Faur, and translator Ralph Manheim. In addition to correspondence with various European publishers, there are large files of internal Pantheon Books and Harcourt Brace Jovanovich correspondence, and with individual colleagues, including William Jovanovich, Kyrill Schabert, and Wolfgang Sauerländer. Series IV, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Papers, is subdivided for writings, financial and legal documents, and other papers. There are corrected drafts of manuscripts by Bryher, Günter Grass, Uwe Johnson, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Henry Michaux, and others. Financial records include contracts and royalty statements from 1981-1993. Series V, Writings, is subdivided for the wiritings of Kurt Wolff, Helen Wolff, and others. There are several essays by Kurt Wolff on writers and publishing that appeared as radio broadcasts in the early 1960s. Subjects include Expressionism, Carl Sternheim, Franz Kafka, Karl Kraus, Lou Andreas-Salomé, and Franz Werfel. The writings of Helen Wolff include corrected typescript drafts of articles on publishing and translating and drafts of commemorative reminiscences on authors, friends, and colleagues, including translator Richard Winston. The writings of others include clippings and printed versions of articles. Series VI, Subject Files, consists chiefly of clippings on writers and publishers and Series VII, Personal Papers, consists chiefly of printed ephemera.
