Papers include correspondence regarding land speculation, surveys, and division of vast tracts of land in Kentucky, as well as the legal and financial problems associated with their landholdings; land records for acreage along the Kentucky, Ohio, and Green rivers; orders of payment and receipts regarding Norborne Beall's personal business; accounts and ledgers from Williamsburg and early Louisville, Ky., stores and merchants; and legal records. The letters and records also chronicle the hardships and dangers of frontier Kentucky, slave concerns, Kentucky economics, and politics. Correspondents include John May, George May, John Marshall, George Mason, Robert Morris, George Nicholas, Richard M. Johnson, Joseph Hamilton Daviess, Samuel Griffin, Robert Breckinridge, Basil Holmes, David Meade, James Mercer, David Ross, Robert Lewis, Henry Clay, Robert P. Letcher, and others. Also included are the papers of the William L. Booth family of Meade County, Ky., and Leavenworth, Ind. which contain correspondence and business and legal records. The bulk of the collection is correspondence discussing farming, finances, legal and business matters, diseases, family matters, the Mexican War, Civil War, religion, and politics.

Journal made from rough notes of a trip to America. Cresswell came to America in hopes of acquiring land and settling permanently, but personal difficulties, the uncertain state of affairs, and the Revolutionary War caused him to return to England. While travelling, he visited or lived in Barbadoes, Maryland, Virginia, western Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Philadelphia, and New York. Included are observations on the towns he visited, frontier techniques and customs, the social customs of both Indians and whites, and details of the growth of the revolutionary movement. Names mentioned include Captain Buddecomb, Captain George Rogers Clark, Captain Christopher Gist, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, John Neville, and George Rice.

Ohio Company (1747-1779). Petition to the King for settling the Ohio River valley, 1748.

Title: Petition to the King for settling the Ohio River valley, 1748.

The petition was submitted by John Hanbury, London merchant, in behalf of himself, Thomas Lee, and others including Lawrence Washington. The petitioners request the king to instruct the governor of Virginia to grant the Company 500,000 acres of Ohio Valley land free of quit rent for ten years on which they will settle 100 families, erect a fort and maintain a garrison, fand carry on trade with the Indians, all of which will increase the crown's revenue and crreate a strong frontier.

This collection contains materials related to William Darlington's book, Christopher Gist's Journals , published in 1893 by J. R. Weldin & Co. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Included are hand written copies of Gist's journals, collected by Darlington, as well as research notes, a manuscript draft, and several printing plates depicting maps used in the publication. A small portion of the book's galley proofs, a typed preliminary version of the final publication, is also present. The materials in this collection are mostly undated, but were created in the late nineteenth century presumably by Darlington. Christopher Gist's journals reflect the surveyor's experiences and observations while exploring the Ohio Territory in the early 1750s. They provide a unique record of early interactions with Native Americans during this period of British expansion that precipitated the French and Indian War. Notes relating to Andrew Montour, an interpreter and negotiator in the Virginia and Pennsylvania frontiers during the 1750s and 1760s, and also present at the Conference at Logstown, are included.

The papers from Forbes's campaign against the French at Ft. Duquesne contain correspondence, reports about Indian allies and the colonial governments, military returns and instructions, intelligence reports and some financial papers. They concern strategy, supply, the advance across Pennsylvania, colonial cooperation, provisioning of the troops, Indian negotiations and relations with British and colonial officers. Material is present from other British campaigns in the French and Indian war, particularly the assault at Ft. Ticonderoga, the massacre at Ft. William Henry, the siege of Louisburg, and Braddock's defeat which is described in the letterbook of Sir John St.Clair, the highest ranking officer to survive.
