A1078-95: This accretion consists of linear strip surveys prepared from original field notes. The geographical sequence of the surveys is from west to east: Lockport to Rochester (Book 2), Jordan to Frankfort (Book 3), and Frankfort to Albany (Book 4). The lcoation of the original first volume in the sequence is unknown. The series consists of field notes from surveys made for the Canal Commissioners pursuant to provisions of Part I, Chapter 9, Title 9, Article1 of the Revised Statutes of 1827, which directed that the Commissioners have maps and field notes made for all canals constructed by the state. These maps and field notes were submitted by the Canal Commissioners to the Canal Board for approval, and upon approval were certified by the commissioners as correct and filed in the Comptroller's Office. The notes cover the Erie, Chenango, Crooked Lake, Cayuga and Seneca, and Oswego canals. This series contains only field notes; maps are filed separately.

Bound folio volumes contain ink, wash and charcoal maps of the canal system in New York State. These surveys were made pursuant to legislation of 1827 requiring a complete manuscript map and field notes of every canal to be completed.

There is also at least one sheet present relating to the Cayuga and Seneca Canal. Records pertain to the Middle and Western divisions of the Erie Canal only.

Title: Holmes Hutchinson and family papers, 1844-1904.

Letters, 1885-1904, from M. L. Randolph of Blythewood Plantation, Iberville Parish, to Hutchinson's wife and daughter (Mrs. F. H. Lintner) concern the management of, taxes paid on, and revenue received from the cypress swampland. A stock certificate issued in 1829 by the Fort-Plain Bridge Company to Holmes Hutchinson and transferred in 1847 to Charles Hutchinson is present. Hutchinson's cash expenses for trips, 1844-1851, made from Utica to Bayou Goula and return are recorded in the account book (1844-1853), as are expenses for trips made to Washington, D. C., and St. Louis, Missouri. Information regarding the estate of Silas F. Hudson, the Oswego and Syracuse Railroad, and accounts with Franklin A. Hudson and Robert Sewall is also available in the account book.

Title: Edwin Hutchinson papers, 1861-1866.

The collection is comprised chiefly of letters from Edwin Hutchinson to his family which describe his duties at military hospitals and on battlefields during the Civil War. Letters (1861-1862) from Fort McQuade, Arlington Heights, Virginia, comment on military life in camp and his internship at the U.S. General Hospital in Annapolis. Letters (1862-1863) describe his duties during the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Chancellorsville, and the Battle of Gettysburg. Also described are his experiences caring for the wounded after battles, during campaigns in northern Virginia, and near Chattanooga, Tennessee, and in the U.S. Army hospital at Stevenson, Alabama. Letters reflect on General Sherman's evacuation of Atlanta (1864), Sherman's march to the sea (Dec. 1864-March 1865), General Lee's surrender, and President Lincoln's assassination. Letters from New York City pertain to the settlement of Holmes Hutchinson's estate and Edwin's courses at medical school. Papers include official orders and appointments to medical duties during the war, a diploma from Columbia College (1866), and two certificates of merit for services during the war.

A collection of family papers, particularly of Joseph A. Lintner and his wife Francis. Included are correspondence, journals, account books, a common place book, scientific articles, family legal documents such as deeds, inventory's and wills and a scrapbook. Several items in the collection relate to George A. Lintner and his father Albert. These items include sermons and essays by George and an inventory of Albert's estate. A journal of George A. Lintner from 1839-1871 is also included.

This collection, which throws light on the intellectual history of Western New York and on the anti-slavery movement in the North (1822-36), includes letters to Spalding relating to his mercantile business in Canandaigua, Ontario County (1817-23) and in Lockport, Niagara County (1823-50); to his manufacture of agricultural implements in Lockport (1840s); to merchandising in New York and the Midwest (1820-40); to banking in Rochester and New York (1819-24); and to labor, land, and lumbering in Michigan Territory (1817-35). Included are letters from Thomas B. Barnum of Canandaigua (1823-24), editor of the ONTARIO FREEMAN (a Canandaigua, N.Y. newspaper) and co-editor with Spalding of PLAIN TRUTH; letters from Elisha Dean of Rochester (1829-30) on local affairs, court cases, and the election of 1830; letters from Holmes Hutchinson, surveyor, on personal affairs, and on surveys in New England on the Erie and other canals; letters from Elihu Francis Marshall, who was the city treasurer of Rochester, a reformer, journalist, printer, and publisher, on personal affairs, business, banking, politics, and churches in Rochester, and satirizing the "Missionary spirit"; a letter (1826) describing missionary activities in the Society Islands; letters from Harvey Newcomb of Rochester (1820s) on politics, business, and the press. Many of the letters of the 1820s comment on the political and economic agitation over the construction and functioning of the Erie and other canals. Also included are letters relating to the establishment by Spalding of the newspaper PRIESTCRAFT EXPOSED AND PRIMITIVE CHRISTIANITY DEFENDED, the manuscript editorials and articles for the first issue, and other letters concerning its relationship to the PLAIN TRUTH; three letters to Spalding from Benjamin Lundy (1835-36) relating to his plan to establish a colony in Mexico, to the "Mexican Insurrection" and to the intention of Lydia Maria Francis Child to settle in the colony, and mentioning John Quincy Adams's purchase for distribution of 150 Texas pamphlets; a plea by Oliver Wetmore of Utica, secretary of the NYSSAS, to the presidents of local abolitionist groups (of which Spalding was one) to subsidize the STANDARD DEMOCRAT of Utica as an abolitionist newspaper; and copies of the PLAIN TRUTH.
