Joseph A. Lintner graduated from Schoharie Academy in 1837 and relocated to New York, N.Y. In 1848 he moved back to Schoharie, N.Y. and married Francis C. Hutchinson, daughter of Holmes Hutchinson. As early as 1853 he began collecting insects. In 1868 he began working for the New York State Museum, and in 1880 he was appointed State Entomologist.

Lintner's father was George Ames Lintner, a Lutheran minister at Schoharie, Middleburgh and Cobleskill. His grandfather was Albert Lintner. Lintner's sister, Aurelia, married Peter Swart Danforth in 1839. Danforth was a lawyer and in 1872 was appointed a justice on the New York State Supreme Court.
