The papers also include extensive correspondence, notably with Cooper's American publisher Carey and Lea, and with members of the Cooper and De Lancey families. There are many letters written by Cooper to Commodore William Branford Shubrick (1790-1874). Also in the collection are business papers and ledgers, copies of contracts, deeds, and indentures.

Papers, 1812-1865.
The Samuel Francis Du Pont Papers include correspondence with more than 1,500 individuals. There is a good deal of official and semi-official correspondence describing naval practices and policies as well as Du Pont's career. Of particular interest are letters from British diplomats and naval officers during the 1840s and 50s describing the operations of the British Navy. Letters received from William B. Reed, American minister to China, document the negotiations leading up to the Treaty of Tientsin which opened up China to western trade. Letters from American missionaries Samuel Wells and William and Edward Syle describe the missionary movement in China and efforts to eradicate the opium trade. The files also contain correspondence reflecting Du Pont's role in the Naval Efficiency Board and the reform movement which sought to modernize the navy as it moved into the age of steam.

Title:
James Fenimore Cooper collection 1792-1976 1792-1894
The collection provides evidence of the personal and professional life of James Fenimore Cooper, and to a lesser degree, the Cooper family, between 1792 and 1976. The collection documents Cooper's writing career, service in the United States Navy, and travels through Europe, and consists of correspondence, writings, personal papers, legal and financial documents, clippings, artwork, and objects. As an author who was engaged in the process of printing and publishing his works, and who was deeply interested in copyright, Cooper's papers shed light on book production during the mid nineteenth-century.
