Title: [Commonplace book]. [1819-1869]

Manuscript commonplace book of Louisa Wildman, the wife of Thomas Wildman, who owned Newstead Abbey from 1817-1861. Much of the volume is composed of poetical excerpts in Wildman's own hand, but there are also many autograph contributions by others who visited Newstead. Many of these contributions are signed with initials or ciphers, but contributors such as Washington Irving, Thomas Moore, C.H. Reaston-Rodes, William Bolton Finch and Charles Samuel Stewart signed their names in full. There are many original compositions by Thomas Wildman included in the volume as well as several drawings, sketches and watercolors by his sister, Maria Gardiner. Many of the passages and excerpts included by Wildman are contemporary works of poetry and prose and include Charles Symmons, Caroline Symmons, Thomas Campbell, Walter Scott, and Lord Byron. The Clark LIbrary also holds Thomas Wildman's commonplace book, 1819-1858.
