Civil War papers, including letters from John M. Tate and W. E. Stitt, two of Brown's friends in the Confederate Army in Virginia and eastern North Carolina. Tate was with the 11th North Carolina Regiment. Their letters discuss finances, supplies, news of friends, camp life, and battles. Also included are correspondence with the N.C. Subsistence Department and other items concerning supplying provisions to the state; and some political correspondence, chiefly about the establishment of a pro-Confederate newspaper to oppose Gov. W. W. Holden.

Correspondence, financial and legal papers, genealogical information and an ambrotype. Collection consists chiefly of letters of brothers, Charles Beverly Tate, James Graham Tate, and William Hanson Tate to their father, Charles Campbell Tate, and siblings Nannie Montgomery Tate and John Montgomery Tate. The brothers write about school news at Emory and Henry, 1859-1861, and Virginia Military Institute, 1857-1859; teaching at Anchor and Hope Academy, Wythe County, Virginia; a trip to Richmond for the dedication of the Crawford equestrian statue of George Washington; and the Civil War in which both William and James were killed. Civil War topics mentioned include camp life, evacuation of Harper's Ferry and burning of its bridge and public buildings, court-martial and execution of deserters, 1st battle of Kernstown, short rations, Kelly's Ford, Bristoe station, Shepherdstown, retreat from Cotton Hill, other skirmishes and generals J.E.B. Stuart, John B. Floyd, Gabriel C. Wharton, Henry Heth, Humphrey Marshall, Stonewall Jackson, Ambrose P. Hill, and James Longstreet. The collection also contains family financial and legal papers; genealogical papers on the Graham and Tate families; "The Graham family" by Nannie Montgomery Tate Graham; "Letters of a V.M.I. cadet, 1857-1858," and "The Tate family of Wythe County, Virginia" by Agnes Graham Sanders Riley; and a framed ambrotype of David Graham.
