The records of the Office of Vice President and Secretary, 1925-1963, reflect Harold Oliver Voorhis' tenure as Secretary (1925-1945), Vice Chancellor and Secretary (1945-1956), and Vice President and Secretary (1956-1962). The materials consist of correspondence, memoranda, committee minutes, reports, printed material, charts, blueprints, petitions, press releases, speeches, questionnaires and photographs. The records reflect the growth, diversity, and complexity of New York University, the development of higher education as a whole, and the reactions and adjustments of a major, private urban university to the changing social concerns during these several decades. Title: Records of the Office of Vice President for University Relations 1957-1962

The Office of the Vice President for University Relations was created in 1957 in response to the New York University Self-Study which recognized a need for coordination between the university and the community which it served. The Public Relations Department which oversaw the Office of Publication and Printing and Information Services was administratively transferred to the Vice President for University Relations when the new office was established. Arthur L. Brandon held the Office of Vice President for University Relations from 1957 through December 31, 1963. Arthur Leon Brandon had been Director of University Relations, a member of the public relations commission of the Association of American Colleges, and president of the American College Public Relations Association (ACPRA) from 1944 to 1946. The Office of the Vice President for University Relations was dissolved in 1965. These records include: correspondence, memoranda, press releases, reports, and minutes generated by the Office during Brandon's tenure.

Title: Records of the Office of the President (Harry Woodburn Chase) 1933-1951

Harry Woodburn Chase was Chancellor at New York University from 1933-1951. Prior he had been with the University of North Carolina and the University of Illinois. Chase was a firm believer in the value of general education, the important role of education in safeguarding democracy, freedom of expression, academic freedom, racial and religious tolerance, awareness of international affairs, and Negro education. He was involved in numerous organizations, namely: the Lotos Club, Trinity Church, the American Committee for Christian German Refugees, the Metropolitan Opera Association, the Federal Committee on the Older Worker, the New York State Committee for the Retail Trade Minimum Wage Board, and Memorial Hospital. These papers contain speeches, correspondence, and ephemera from the period of his Chancellorship. Much of the material deals with University life during World War II.

The primary function of the Secretary was to assist the Chancellor in the discharge of his duties. The Secretary conducted correspondence relating to the University, and prepared and maintained the University Council's minutes, documentary materials, records, and correspondence. In addition, the Secretary oversaw faculty personnel records, and supervised the publication of annual reports. These records were mainly accumulated by the Vice President and Secretary's Office during the tenure of Harold Voorhis(1925-1945).

The collection includes architectural drawings, budgets, correspondence, memoranda, minutes, photographs, publications, press clippings, reports, and questionnaires. Some material deals with the administrative reorganization of NYU, and with the building plans of the University, including the Development of Washington Square project.

Leslie Tompkins Papers, 1937-1945

Title: Leslie Tompkins Papers 1937-1945

Leslie Tompkins was associated with New York University for over fifty years as a student, administrator, and law professor. He came to NYU as an undergraduate in 1886 and graduated from the School of Law 1892. Tompkins served as the University's Assistant Treasurer and Librarian (beginning in 1892), as well as the Law School's Secretary (beginning in 1898). He began teaching law classes at the newly reorganized Law School in 1898 and devoted his efforts exclusively to teaching after 1918. Tompkins' connection with NYU continued until September 1940, when he retired and assumed the position of Emeritus Professor of Law. His includes Tompkins' reminiscences of his time at the University during a formative period for the institution and provides insight into the the University's management. The Harry Woodburn Chase Papers contain 23 linear feet and 7 inches of materials from the period of his Chancellorship at New York University (1933-1951). With a very few exceptions, materials from his early years and his administrations at the University of North Carolina and the University of Illinois are not included. The papers contain speeches, ephemera, correspondence, memoranda, handwritten and printed drafts of speeches and statements, reports, studies, surveys, minutes, promotional literature for non-New York University organizations, invitations, budgets, clippings, photographs, architectural sketches, and a partial bibliography. Much of the material deals with University life during World War II.Correspondents include Marshall S. Brown, Dean of Faculties, Provost Rufus Smith, and Assistant Chancellor Harold O. Voorhis.

Title: Records, 1952-1966.

The records consist of correspondence, circular memoranda, minutes, reports, meeting notes, policy statements and analyses, evaluations, press releases, printed material, newspaper clippings, surveys and questionnaires, and a few photographs. The collection has been divided into five subgroups, representing each of the Chancellor and Executive Vice Presidents, with the exception of David Henry and Carroll Newsom, who have been combined into one subgroup due to the paucity of the Newsom material and an inability, in some cases, to differentiate between tenures (see series note below). In addition, a small portion of records generated in the final months of the George Stoddard administration were originally interfiled with the bulk of the Russell Niles' papers and have been maintained that way for reasons of continuity and logic (see series note below). Within each subgroup the material has been further divided into series and subseries according to original order. Series titles generally reflect the original file titles and have been changed only when it was necessary to highlight a particular grouping and facilitate access without disturbing the inherent arrangement.
