Letters to Neal from Park Benjamin, Sir John Bowring, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Pierpont, Ann S. Stephens, and others concern authors and writing, payment for Neal's work, health concerns, slavery in the south, interpretations of poetry, comments about Portland, Maine, and thank-you letters. In addition, correspondence from the Sun Times in New York, the Boston Literary Gazette, and other publications write to Neal soliciting submissions. Also included in the collection are two dime novels written by Neal: Little Moccasin and the White-Faced Pacer, and several bound scrapbooks containing clippings of his work.

Title: William Samuel Johnson papers, 1834-1868.

Papers dealing with Johnson's public life in New York City and in the New York State Senate. While Assistant Alderman, Johnson received numerous letters of application from citizens seeking patronage for a variety of municipal offices, ranging from requests to be a night watchman to a position as a municipal court justice. Also, letters, reports, and other documents relating to various municipal services such as health, welfare, fire fighting, street maintenance, water, sewers, railroads, ferries, and stage coaches. Some letters and documents concern Whig Party politics in the 3rd Ward. Johnson's correspondence as a New York Society Library Trustee refers to the proposed merger with the New York Athenaeum. Also, twelve items relating to his term in the State Senate, covering taxation and control of foreign laborers.

Murray, Samuel S. Seward, William Henry Seward, the Smith family, William Wickham, George D. Wickham, James W. Wilkin, and Henry G. Wisner. Subjects of these personal papers include legal affairs, family and personal life, railroads, education, local government, business affairs, land transactions, western lands and settlement, and political matters such as campaigns, elections, the Albany Regency, slavery, legislative business, and appointments. Other notable segments include account books, receipts, maps, surveys, minutes, letters, and legal papers concerning the Drowned Lands, 1807-1850; transcript of the divorce trial of Martha Ellis vs. Levi Ellis, 1837; maps, deeds, agreements, accounts, letters, and legal papers concerning military bounty lands in Orange County, 1791-1838; and Civil War letters and military documents of Alfred Neafie, 1864-1865.

Correspondence, ca. 1798 - ca. 1874, of various members of the Hoffman family. Most of the letters are addressed to Bridget McDonell Wickham, wife of George D. Wickham of Goshen (N.Y.). George Wickham's niece, Emily Burrall Hoffman, daughter of Jonathan Burrall and wife of Ogden Hoffman, writes extensively about family matters, deaths of children, home remedies, etc. Emily's sister, Frances Amelia Burrall Hoffman, wife of Ogden Hoffman's first cousin Murray Hoffman, writes on similar subjects. Both include descriptions of New York City social life, and gossip about their acquaintances, including David Hosack. There are also a few letters from Ogden Hoffman's second wife, Virginia E. Southard Hoffman, about church furnishings and general family matters. Bridget Wickham's other correspondents include her husband; Susan Gillespie; Helen Todd; Ogden Hoffman, and his sons Ogden Hoffman and Charles Burrall Hoffman; and Charles Burrall Hoffman's wife, Harriet Bronson Willett Hoffman. There is also a large group of letters addressed to Harriet Bronson Willett before her marriage, many from her sister, Maggie. Some letters to Bridget Wickham from Henry Hone and his wife Caroline include gossip about David Hosack, and references to fear of cholera in New York in 1832. Throughout the letters there are scattered references to the family's business affairs, and to George Wickham's trade in butter.

Papers of Washington Irving, his brothers Ebenezer Irving and William Irving, his nephews and nieces Pierre P. Irving, Pierre M. Irving, Catherine Anne Irving, and Sarah Irving, and other Irving family members, include correspondence, literary manuscripts, legal papers, wills, passports, contracts, bills and receipts, invitations, deeds, statements, certificates, genealogy, photographs, prints, maps, clippings, and other miscellaneous items. Included in the correspondence are letters from Washington Irving to family and friends, 1813-1859, concerning his literary work, publishing affairs, domestic life, social life, travel experiences, and work on his house Sunnyside; some were written while in diplomatic posts in London, 1829-1832, and in Madrid, 1842-1846. Other items include a diary of a voyage to the Columbia River by Alfred Seton, 1811-1815; diary kept by Susan V.W. Storrow while at Sunnyside, 1863-1864; assessment rolls for the Town of Greenburgh, 1839-1870; and Scottish document relating to the Irving family, 1585.
