The collection includes business papers, ca. 1840-1871, of Lewis Thompson, consisting chiefly of correspondence, accounts, bills, receipts, slave lists, sharecropping contracts, and other documents relating to the production of cotton and wheat in Bertie County, N.C.; to sugar in Rapides Parish, La.; and to the sale of crops through factors in New York, Norfolk, New Orleans, and Baltimore. There is also a considerable amount of correspondence relating to Lewis Thompson's role as executor of many estates, particularly that of his father-in-law, William M. Clark, and to Thompson's investments with brokers in New York. Papers before 1840 consist chiefly of land grants, deeds, and estate papers of Thompson's Pugh, Williams, Clark, Thompson, and Urquhart relations. There is also a group of papers relating to land controlled by the Tuscarora Indians. Few papers relate to Thompson's political career or to his involvement in UNC. Papers after Thompson's death in 1867 relate chiefly to the activities of his son, Thomas W. Thompson, who took over his father's North Carolina business affairs. The plantations in Louisiana had been run by Thomas's brother William for many years before their father's death.

Correspondence chiefly concerns the Dartmouth College case (Trustees of Dartmouth College v. William Woodward. Correspondents, whose letters primarily relate to the Dartmouth College case, include a number of Dartmouth College trustees including Nathaniel Niles, Israel W. Putnam, Seth Payson, Timothy Farrar, Elijah Paine, and Asa McFarland. Among those opposing the college trustees and supporting Dartmouth University, Brown received letters from Gov. William Plumer, Gov. John Taylor Gilman, William Henry Woodward, John Wheelock, and William Allen. Other correspondents include Joseph Hopkinson, Joseph Perry, Nathan Smith, Benjamin J. Gilbert, Joseph Annance, Alexander Ramsay, Jermiah Mason, Azel Backus, Jeremiah Day, R.D. Mussey, and Erastus Fairbanks. To a lesser extent the records concern fiscal matters of Moor's Charity School and the enrollment of boys from the Stockbridge Indians and the tribe at St. Francis. Other subjects include the loaning of a telescope to Dartmouth by William Thurston, and the leasing of college-owned land in Wheelock, VT. The records include Brown's inaugural address and some accounts.

The diary that Thompson began upon his graduation from Harvard in July 1786 and kept throughout the year. Detailed, candid entries record the busy social life of the young Harvard graduate in Byfield and Franklin. Included are records of frequent trips to Newburyport, Wrentham, Boston, and Providence, R.I. The latter accompanied by a sketch of Brown University. In his diary Thompson recaps sermons and public lectures by Nathanael Emmons, David Sanford, Samuel Spring, and others, including Noah Webster's lectures on the English language and education; a "Lafayette evening," and other social and political events. The journal contains lively records of his encouncters and conversations with Theophilus Bradbury, Theophilus Parsons, Nathanael Emmons, Samuel Spring, and other notables; many entries contain snippets of dialogue such as lively exchange on the "the manners of Virginians" including George Washington. The diary also reflects Thompson's thoughts on his reading and studies, his religious views, reflections on the nature of religion, Deism, and "natural philosophy," political opinions and his considerable anxiety about his future.
