Taintor, Charles M. (Charles Micaiell), b. 1817. Charles M. Taintor collection, 1705-1850.

Title: Charles M. Taintor collection, 1705-1850.

Includes a variety of documents pertaining to Reverend Solomon Williams and his family of Lebanon, Connecticut, including writings and correspondence. Of particular note is a 1730 receipt for the "sale of one Negro gall about the age of seven". Also includes letters to Doctor Thomas Williams. The collection contains legal documents, such as bills of sale, deeds, and court summons, and financial records for individuals and businesses in New London County. Also of interest are a death certificate of Judah Lord, who died in Haiti in 1837; a satirical piece about the Stamp Act, in which the Stampman is sentenced to hang and burn; sermons by David Huntington; correspondence to the First Church of Christ in Canterbury; Colchester deeds and correspondence of the Isham family of Colchester; and the petition of John Henry, a Negro man owned by Paul Field, for his freedom and state support in return for fighting in the Revolution (in folder 3).

Business and personal correspondence, financial papers, and other items addressed to Charles M. Tainor and his father, Charles Tainor. Early correspondence and financial papers chiefly relate to the elder Tainor's dealings in the lumber industry in Michigan. Later materials concern the son's investments in Florida oil and land; mining; and other business ventures, many of which in the Southwest or Midwest. Another group of letters chiefly from 1876 are written by or about Edward Tainor, Charles M. Tainor's brother, and discuss his life in, and recent return from, Shanghai, China.

Title: Charles M. Taintor collection, ca. 1720-1892.

Primarily financial and legal documents from various locations by different individuals. Legal records include depositions, writs, and summonses, ca. 1720-1816. Goodrich family documents consist of deeds and writs, 1722-1823. Financial records, 1761-1809 include a receipt for a share in the Susquehannah Purchase, 1774, a list of estimated value of land lots in Ohio Companies, 1800, and bills and receipts. Among the letters is one concerning the sale of wine for Joseph Isham, 1785. Also included is a 1798 crew list for the sailing vessel Mary of New York, and orders of payment from Middletown, Connecticut selectmen.

Title: Charles M. Taintor account books, 1849-1873.

Account books kept by Charles M. Taintor. Entries in the first volume were recorded when the family was living in Shelburne, Massachusetts. In 1865 the family moved to Colchester, Connecticut; by 1870 they were in Wethersfield, Connecticut. . There are also a few entries recorded in the Pyquag section of Newington, Connecticut. Occasionally, Taintor experimented with different spellings of his last name, including Tayintor and Tayghntor. Taintor recorded the amount of money he, his father, and others (first names only) paid for items such as food and travel. These items range from sugar to fishing tackle, dress patterns to railroad fare.
