Title: Diaries, 1876-1918.

Diaries of Robert Apthorp Boit, Boston insurance executive, containing observations on family, business, and social life. Boit commented on many social and political leaders of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as Henry Lee Higginson and Curtis Guild. Frequently mentioned are Boit's children, his wife Lillian Willis Boit, his brother the painter Edward Darley Boit, his son-in-law Dr. Hugh Cabot, and his grandfather Captain John Boit. Letters from Senator Henry Cabot Lodge are attached. Boit belonged to several clubs and was especially active in the Papyrus Club and the St. Botolph Club. He served as president of the Boston Associated Board of Trade, and toured the Panama Canal during its construction in 1907 with a group of prominent American businessmen. A description of the trip with photographs is included, as are descriptions of trips to Europe. The diaries are indexed.

The papers consist chiefly of letters to Childs in thanks for copies of "Recollections" and "The Stratford upon Avon memorial fountain to Shakespeare." There are very brief mentions of the Philadelphia "Public Ledger," the "Commercial Bulletin," and "Lippincott's magazine," hopes for fairer treatment of American Indians, U.S. Grant's travels in Grenada and Peking, memorial church windows in London, the common bond between England and the U. S., and portraits of Union generals at West Point. In addition there are letters, 1851-1881, bound in an extra-illustrated copy of "Recollections" which are to or from people mentioned in the book. These include letters from G.P.R. James on the consulate at Norfolk, Va., Hablot Knight Brown on graphotypes, Lytton Bulwer on a charitable request, William Howitt requesting Irish sketches from Carlton, and a patronage request from Simon Cameron to President Grant. Also Charles Dickens on funeral arrangements for a Mr. Fleming, Samuel Randall and William T. Sherman conveying personal news, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry W. Longfellow and Fitz-Greene Halleck sending regrets, Matthew Arnold sending thanks, and George Bancroft sending checks.

Carrington Family papers, 1749-1929

Title: Carrington Family papers 1749-1929

The papers consist of correspondence, pamphlets, printed material, scrapbooks, sermons, and other papers relating to members of the Carrington family. Henry Beebee Carrington (1824-1912) and his grandfather, David Lewis Beebe (1763-1803), are two central figures in the papers. Material relating to David Lewis Beebe, including essays and sermons, documents his religious duties in Connecticut and family concerns in Ohio. Henry Beebee Carrington material includes correspondence, a diary, a letterbook, maps, pamphlets, scrapbooks, and other items documenting his experiences as a student at Yale University, as a lawyer practicing in Ohio, and as a commanding officer for Union forces during the Civil War. Carrington's role in military campaigns and treaty negotiations with Indians of the American West is also documented. His design of Fort Philip Kearney, the site of a famous massacre, and treaty negotiations with the Flathead Indians of Montana are detailed in pamphlets, scrapbooks and other papers.

Century Company records

Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

Scrapbooks of Curtis Guild Jr. mostly contain newspaper clippings, programs, and pamphlets concerning his professional and public career as a partner and editor of the family-owned Commercial Bulletin, as Lieutenant Colonel and Inspector-General during the Spanish-American War, as Republican Party leader, as Lieutenant Governor and Governor of Massachusetts, as special Ambassador to Mexico's Centennial celebration, and as Ambassador to Russia from 1911-13. Scrapbooks also include some correspondence to and about family members, his father Curtis Guild, his mother Sarah Cobb Guild, his brother Courtenay, and his sister Sarah Louise. Correspondence relates to his work in army camps in the South, his duties under the command of Fitzhugh Lee in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, and his foreign service in Mexico and Russia. (Cont) Scrapbooks also include travel descriptions of the U.S. and Europe, descriptions of happenings in Boston, and a run of editorials by Courtenay Guild; poetry and an account book of Curtis Guild Sr., with a memorial scrapbook to commemorate his life.

Title: Papers of Fitzhugh Lee [manuscript], 1731-1952.

The collection contains letters, commissions, orders, notes, reports, and clippings pertaining to Lee's service in the U.S. cavalry in the West and in the C.S.A. cavalry. Post-Civil War material includes correspondence, speeches, and clippings about Civil War incidents and leaders, especially James Longstreet and the battle of Gettysburg. Other material concerns his travels, his service as consul-general at Havana during the Cuban revolution and in the Spanish American War. Business interests are represented by correspondence and papers pertinent to the American Animal Tether Company, the Chicago Town Company of Virginia, the Pittsburgh and Virginia Railroad Company, the Rockbridge Company, and the South Boston Improvement Company. There is some material, chiefly financial and legal documents, of the Lee and related Mason family ancestors including Northern Neck land grants and a deed of gift for a slave, as well as a diary of Mrs. Sidney Smith Lee. Among items of interest are an 1859 report by Earl Van Dorn on a skirmish with Commanches, confidential communications of Lee, Robert E. Lee and Jeb Stuart including telegrams to Stuart before Yellow Tavern, Fitzhugh Lee's report on the Appomattox campaign, letters regarding events of the Cuban revolution including the Isle of Pines uprising, the U.S.S. Maine, and an incident involving General Shafter, and a letter from a former driver offering to serve in the Spanish American War.

The Guild family papers contain three diaries; a catalogue of books (1884), probably of Curtis Guild Sr.; an address book (1943); a checkbook (1945-46) of the New England Trust Co.; and miscellaneous newspaper clippings, Harvard University club memorabilia, and a few manuscript song lyrics and letters of Guild family members. The diaries include: one dated 1871-72, probably by Sarah C.C. Guild, describing daily events in Boston and a trip to Europe on the steamer Tripoli, June to Nov. 1871; and two by Sarah L. Guild. The first is dated Jan. through July 1896, and describes daily events and social life in Boston; activities of family members Curtis Sr., Sarah C.C., Curtis Jr., and Courtenay Guild; a trip to Europe in May-July 1896; and the Cuban Revolution. The second (1898-1900) describes social events; a trip to Poland Springs, Maine; the death of her mother in Sept. 1898; and Cuba and the Spanish-American War. (Cont.) Also, a one-volume "Souvenir of Oliver Wendell Holmes," compiled by Curtis Guild in 1895, containing poetry and letters written to Guild by Holmes, broadsides, engravings, pamphlets, and newspaper clippings on Holmes's life and death.
