This series contains reports, receipts, and accounting papers filed by the Steward and Treasurer of the Insane Hospital with the Auditor of the State for his review and to ensure the proper management of hospital funds. The series contains accounting sheets tabulating income and expenditures of the hospital, as well as a large number of receipts for items purchased by the hospital. The facility was known as the Insane Hospital from 1852-1893. The agency which oversees the hospital was later known as State Hospitals. The State Auditor was known as the Comptroller of Public Accounts before 1868.

Executive documents usually consisted of reports which accompanied the Governor's annual message to the General Assembly or Legislature. Included, for example, are annual reports of the Auditor, the State Financial Agents, the Board of Trustees of the Freedman's Hospital, the Inspector of the Alabama Penitentiary, and the Superintendent of Education, as well as special reports and copies of agreements. The documents were originally submitted to the Governor and were bound together by fiscal or calendar year. They served to inform officials of activities, operations, problems, and recommendations for legislation.

Title: Pamphlets, miscellaneous : state publication, [1901-1915].

This series contains brochures which instruct on bringing a patient to the hospital; notify persons applying for Nurse or Attendant, with a discussion of the Training School and lists of graduates for 1896-1898; and which list newspapers sent gratuitously to the hospitals, with an acknowledgement to the publisher. The brochures are bound in a volume entitled "Bulletins, Insane Hospitals, 1874-1907." Also included is a pamphlet written by Frank S. Moody, President of the First National Bank of Tuskaloosa, to the Legislature in reply to remarks made in the Legislature about the management of hospital funds by the bank and about the Treasurer of the Hospital. The statements alleged that the bank had been illiberal in the matter of exchange, that in their opinion "the bank was organized for and has been operated on state funds," and that the Treasurer of the Hospital, John Little, was also Vice-President of the bank. Moody defends the bank's position in relation to these and other charges. The pamphlet does not have any publishing imprint.

Title: Letters to the Governor regarding patients, 1897-1899.

This series contains a number of letters sent to the Governor of Ala. by patients, patients' friends, and the Superintendent of the hospital regarding the release, treatment, and condition of patients at the institution. The bulk of the letters are from patients pleading to release them from the hospital due to poor conditions or claims of a cure. One folder consists entirely of letters from and about Miss A.M. Sheffield, a patient at the hospital. The letters from the superintendent give the official response to patients' claims. The agency was later known as State Hospitals.

Title: County Probate Judge reports of insane persons, 1870-1895.

This series contains copies of reports filed with the Secretary of State by county Probate Judges listing the numbers, not names, of insane persons in his county. The Bryce Insane Hospital was the state's only public institution charged with the care and administration of mentally disturbed or retarded individuals. The reports indicate the number of black and white males and females in jail, in private homes, and at the Tuscaloosa hospital. The facility was known as the Insane Hospital from 1852-1893. The agency was later known as State Hospitals.

"State Aid to Hospitals" was a paper read by Dr. Bryce before the Alabama Medical Association at its annual meeting in Selma in 1874 Apr. It shows "the importance of eleemosynary enterprise on the part of the state" and contains "brief reviews of the present condition and prospective wants of the Alabama Insane Hosptal and the Asylum for the Deaf, Dumb, and Blind, with an outline of a reformatory for inebriates and a state medical college under the control and patronage of the state." It is identified as a Meteor Print. The paper is located in a bound volume entitled "Bulletins, Insane Hospitals, 1874-1907," and shelved with publications under Alabama State Hospitals.

Title: Laws, by-laws : state publication, 1861-1890.

This series contains acts of the legislature and by-laws for the erection, organization, and government of the hospital. Included are the creating act and later laws relating to the hospital. The by-laws, rules, and regulations discuss the organization of the Board of Trustees, the duties of officers and employees, admission and discharge procedures, articles which may be sent to patients, transfers of patients, patient activities, "maxims" for dealing with patients, special care of violent, helpless, or destructive patients, standards of conduct for all employees, etc. Peter Bryce wrote and compiled the 1890 report. Laws and by-laws may also be found in bound volumes of the annual reports.

This series consists of ten letters sent to the Governor regarding the insane hospital at Tuscaloosa. The letters are from a variety of sources, including the hospital Superintendent and persons wishing to be employed at the hospital. The series contains three certificates of oath signed by trustees of the hospital, a letter requesting a position on the board of trustees, three letters from the superintendent of the hospital, a resignation from the board of trustees, and a letter from the hospital's treasurer describing the plight of the hospital's finances due to the Civil War. The facility was known as the Insane Hospital from 1852-1893. The agency was later known as State Hospitals.

Alabama Insane Hospital (Tuscaloosa, Ala.). Interim annual reports, 1863-1897.

Title: Interim annual reports, 1863-1897.

The Board of Trustees of the Ala. Insane Hospital were required by law (various series of the Code of Ala.) to submit, to the Governor, an annual or biannual report detailing the condition, activities, and financial condition of the hospital for the previous fiscal year or years. These reports were submitted annually or biennially depending on whether or not the Legislature was in session. The official report issued when the Legislature was in session was published. These interim reports are not published and serve as the only official annual statement of the hospital for those years that a report was not published. The reports contain information on the various activities in the treatment of patients, describe needs of the hospital such as capital improvement or additional staff, and provide statistical information on patients. Present are reports for 1863, 1864, 1868, 1887, 1891, 1893, 1895 and 1897. Published reports for the years 1862, 1867 and 1869-1900 are described in record id ALAV86-A893. The facility was known as the Insane Hospital from 1852-1893. The agency which oversees the hospital was later known as State Hospitals.

This series consists of vouchers, reports, and correspondence to and from the Ala. Insane Hospital regarding its accounts. The vouchers document purchases made by the hospital, including specific items such as clothing and food. The correspondence, including accounting sheets and reports, concerns appropriations and receipts from the State Treasurer. Several lengthy letters from hospital director, Peter Bryce, are included which explain the expenses and accounting methods of the institution.
