The accession consists of 5 cubic feet of papers of oceanographic instrument engineer James M. Snodgrass. The accession includes correspondence, memoranda, reports, photographs and slides documenting Snodgrass's career as an instrument engineer at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The accession also includes three color films of the Scripps campus c1958 and two 1967 audio tape recordings of interviews with Snodgrass on the history of satellite navagation. The accession includes documentation of Snodgrass's work with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission Working Group on Telecommunications and files and photographs documenting the Integrated Global Ocean Station System (IGOSS).

The collection consists of 44 color 35mm slides taken during the period August-September 28, 1950 on R/V HORIZON during the Scripps Institution of Oceanography MidPac Expedition. The slides include images of R/V HORIZON, expedition participants, equipment, work at sea, the Biniki Island and the Hawaiian Islands. Photographs of expeditions participants include images of Ned Barr, Robert Dietz, Robert Dill, Jeffery D. Frautschy, Ed Hamilton, Arthur Maxwell, H. William Menard, Russell Raitt, Roger Revelle, and James M. Snodgrass. Images of equipment include photographs of bathythermograph, hydrophones, Kullenberg Corer, and Phleger Corer.

The accession consists of 38 cubic feet of papers of oceanographic instrumentation engineer James M. Snodgrass who served as head of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Special Developments Division from 1951-1974 and was responsible for the design and development of oceanographic instrumentation at the institution. Snodgrass also deployed oceanographic insruments at sea and is credited with designing the first generation of electronic oceanographic instruments. The accession includes some early correspondence documenting Snodgrass's education and early career. The accession includes professional correspondence, subject files, manuscripts and slides for lectures, laboratory notebooks, photographs of instruments, calendars, tape recordings, films, and project files including material documenting the Integrated Global Ocean Station System (IGOSS). The accession also includes files documenting Snodgrass's work for the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. While the accession includes material dated 1937 to 1994, the bulk of the collection documents Snodgrass's work in association with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1948-1974, and his work as an independent consultant from 1974 until his retirement.
