It contains manuscript and printed music, including holograph scores and sketches, copyists' printed scores and parts, and musical arrangements; correspondence; family papers; writings by and about Klemperer; interviews with Klemperer and others; legal and financial documents; clippings; programs, including many from the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra; photographic materials; materials related to the Kroll Opera; and books annotated by Klemperer and his daughter Lotte. In the earliest 5 items (transcripts), dating from 1910 to 1912, Klemperer speaks about his own composing and also makes reference to performances of Gustav Mahler's works, in one instance his own conducting of Mahler's fourth symphony in Hamburg; in 1 letter Klemperer reminsces about a childhood encounter with Mahler from afar. The conductor Artur Bodansky (in Mannheim at that time) is mentioned a number of times. In an explanatory annotation to these transcripts Alma Mahler refers to Klemperer as "ein junger Musiker, den Mahler sehr schätzte." The remaining 3 items of correspondence are dated 1952 to 1959. Also included is a manuscript of an essay (in English) about Gustav Mahler, presumed to be from Klemperer (the author mentions being present in Munich in 1910 for a rehearsal of the eighth symphony and that he missed the performance because he was conducting in Hamburg at that time); the manuscript is marked "copy" and bears handwritten corrections.

The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.
