Contains miscellaneous correspondence, 1938-1952, including information on William McMurtrie, professor of chemistry at the University of Illinois, and from John I. Hardy, animal fiber technologist for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Also includes a world trip report, 1949, made by Von Bergen to South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, to study sheep and sheep diseases; technical reports, 1957-1971, from the Technical Committee of the International Wool Textile Organization; and various papers on wool and its thermal properties, both by Von Bergen and others. There is also a folder of biographical information, including photographs, lists of publications, etc.

(1889-1890); Manufacturing Investment Co. Paper Mills at Appleton, Wisc. and Madison, Me. (1892); Mt. Tom Sulphite Pulp Co., Mt. Tom Mass. (1893); Umbagog Papers Mills (collaborative study with Frederick Taylor on work measurement, 1892); Tabor Foundry (operating under Taylor production system, 1914-1915); Forstmann Woolen Company (1939-1940); Schwarzenback Huber Weaving Company (1928-1938); and Ludlow Textile Manufacturing Company (1915). Also, notes and drafts for books on marketing and scientific management (1940); reports on spinning mills (1936), defense production (1941), and unemployment and emergency measures for the construction trades (1921); correspondence pertaining to Thompson's work with the U.S. secretary of war on operations management and planning (1917) and letters to E.C. Harwood and John Maynard Keynes on economics, unemployment and the Depression (1934-1935). Additionally, professional certificates; MIT notebook (1888-1889); notebook on experiments (1896); a contract between Thompson and Taylor for collaboration on work measurement and construction studies (1895); press releases; and notes, brochures, and clippings on economics, engineering, marketing, and military spending.

Forstmann Woolen Company. Forstmann Companies Records, 1904-1957, (bulk 1905-1959).

Title: Forstmann Companies Records, 1904-1957, (bulk 1905-1959).

The records consist of ledgers, journals, and cashbooks for the Forstmann and subsidiary companies. Included in the general journals for the Forstmann and Huffmann Company is information on Botany Worsted Mills, the First Company Julius Forstmann worked for when he came to the United States. The ledgers and journals contain information on cash transactions, income and expense accounts, advertising, payroll deductions, union dues, group insurance, and stock inventory. The correspondence in the collection (1924-1925) is found primarily in the papers of Super-Tex, Inc. This correspondence concerns a lease with a real-estate firm, Sperry and Hutchinson, involving Super-Tex, Inc. and the Julius Forstmann & Co., Inc. The Super-Tex, Inc. material also includes the trade-mark registration granted to the company in 1923 as well as related correspondence (1923). Personal ledgers of the Forstmann family include Julius Forstmann, his wife Mrs. Adolfine Forstmann, Elizabeth Forstmann, wife of Curt Erwin Forstmann, and the Orion Steamship cashbook. These personal financial journals record shares, interest earned, and expenses such as postage, charities, and wages for the chauffeur. The Orion Steamship was Julius Forstmann's diesel yacht in which Julius George and Curt Erwin Forstmann traveled around the world in 1929-1930. While the papers and ledgers provide a good source for surveying the financial operations of a twentieth-century textile manufacturing company and subsidiaries, they are less useful for studying the Forstmann family.

J.P. Stevens & Co. [Business records]

Title: [Business records] 1852-1982.

Includes family papers, 1852-1913, primarily legal documents and a few letters. Organizational and administrative records include annual reports, 1949-1972 (with gaps); and legal records. Executive papers contain correspondence and subject files, 1930's-1970's, especially about J.P. Stevens plants in the South. Many papers are from Robert T. Stevens, some of which relate to his testimony in the McCarthy hearings. Executive materials are also present from James D. Finley, head of cotton sales, president and chairman of the board; William T. Stockton, comptroller; and Ward Burns, assistant comptroller, comptroller, and president. Also includes finance reports, 1946-1985; commission notebooks, 1900-1941; advertising materials; an employee handbook, 1965; and materials from the Forstmann Woolen Co., 1905-1944; Carter Fabrics Corp., 1945; and Slater Manufacturing Co., 1945.
