Archer, William Segar, 1789-1855. Virginia political correspondence, 1779-1930.
Title:
Virginia political correspondence, 1779-1930.
This is an artificial collection of letters, mostly political, assembled on the basis of the writers' associations with Virginia, in some instances tenuous. A few legal documents such as indentures and affidavits are included. Many documents are from Virginia members of Congress to presidents of the United States, the secretaries of the Navy and governors of Virginia, most often on matters of patronage; about sixty letters request appointments as midshipmen or as officers in the Marine Corps. Some of the correspondents include John Strode Barbour (6 letters, 1 certificate, 1829-1849), William Segar Archer (5 letters, 1822-1845), John Minor Botts (6 letters, 1842-1884), John Samuel Caskie (8 letters, 1852-1858), John Critcher (8 letters, 1871-1879), Thomas Croxton (7 letters, 1874-1890), William Alexander Harris (7 letters, 1841-1899), John Warfield Johnston (7 letters, 1873-1888), William Atkinson Jones (15 letters, 1891-1899), Anthony Kennedy (5 letters, 1857-1863). Others include Benjamin Watkins Leigh (2 letters, 1806-1835), William McCoy (6 letters, 1815-1835), Francis McFarland (9 letters, 1837-1860), Francis Mallory (6 letters, 1839-1851), Hugh Nelson (8 letters, 1784-1822), Thomas Newton (11 letters, 1808-1841), John Mercer Patton (5 letters, 1836-1869), John Howell Porter (12 letters, 1870-1872), Andrew Stevenson (5 letters, 1863-1872), John Randolph Tucker (8 letters, 1878-1894), Robert E.
