Charles Bonney was born at Sandon, Staffordshire, England, on 31 October 1813 and arrived at Sydney in December 1834. In March 1837 he was the first to overland sheep, bringing some 10,000 belonging to Ebden to a station on the Goulburn. In 1841 a period of depression led to cattle becoming almost unsaleable, and in 1842 Bonney became a magistrate and commissioner of crown lands in South Australia. He held this position for about 15 years. He was in England from 1858 to 1862, and returning to South Australia, became a member of the legislative council in 1865 and 1866. From 1869 to 1871 he was manager of the South Australian Railways and in 1871 he was appointed Inspector of Lands purchased on credit, and in 1880 retired on a pension. He died in Sydney in1885.

A bound typescript of autobiographical notes, 1813-1880, relating to his adventures and explorations as a pioneer overlander from N.S.W. to Port Phillip, and from Port Phillip to South Australia, 1836-1839. He gives an account of his subsequent career in South Australia as Commissioner of Crown Lands, Member of Parliament and public servant. (2 copies bound together, 2 x 20 p.) The United States Sanitary Commission established the Army and Navy Claim Agency (ANCA) in Washington, D.C. on April 1, 1864 to serve as the USSC’s central office to assist Union soldiers, sailors, and their families in prosecuting claims on the federal government for pensions, back pay, bounty, commutation of rations, prize money, and other benefits, without cost. The Army and Navy Claim Agency Archives comprise the records of the Army and Navy Claim Agency; the records of the Pension Agency, its predecessor organization; the registers and cash books of its subsidiary local agencies; and the records of two quasi-independent USSC claim agencies whose origins predate the establishment of the Army and Navy Claim Agency: the Protective War Claim Association of the State of New York, located in New York City, and the Protective War Claim and Pension Agency, located in Philadelphia.
