Contains the papers of three generations of the Lomax family of Warrenton and Norfolk, Va., and Washington, D.C. Papers of Elizabeth Virginia (Lindsay) Lomax (1796-1867) consist of correspondence, 1820-1857; and a ten-volume diary, 1848-1863, kept in Chillicothe, Ohio, Norfolk, Va., Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Md., concerning, in part, her life in Washington and Baltimore during the Civil War. Much of her correspondence and miscellaneous loose papers concern her efforts to obtain a pension based on the military service of her father, William Lindsay (1755-1797), during the Revolution. Papers of her daughter Jane Tayloe (Lomax) Worthington (1821-1847) include letters, 1842-1845, written to family and friends; and commonplace books, 1837-1846, containing poetry, essays, and short stories. Papers of Jane's brother Gen. Lunsford "Lindsay" Lomax (1835-1913) consist of correspondence, 1861-1913; an account book, 1852-1856, kept while a cadet at the United States Military Academy; and miscellaneous items (including a diploma, 1856, issued by the U.S. Military Academy, and a will, 1913, probated in Washington, D.C.). Papers of Lunsford Lindsay Lomax's wife, Elisabeth Winter (Payne) Lomax (1850-1932), include correspondence, 1869-1932, with family and friends; a commonplace book, 1873-1918, containing poetry; a scrapbook, 1879-1944, kept by her and her daughter Elizabeth Lindsay (Lomax) Wood (1874-1951); and miscellaneous materials (including stories, articles, and essays written by Elisabeth Winter (Payne) Lomax). Papers of Elizabeth Lindsay (Lomax) Wood consist of correspondence, 1913-1950, primarily regarding Leaves from an Old Washington Diary, 1854-1863 (New York, 1943), her edited publication of the diaries of her grandmother, Elizabeth Virginia (Lindsay) Lomax. Also, includes typescript copies of diary entries, 1859-1863, of Lucy (Wood) Butler and correspondence with her husband, Waddy B. Butler (1840-1863) concerning her life in Albemarle County, Va., during the Civil War and his service in the 2nd Florida Infantry Regiment, C.S.A.; and genealogical notes on the Dent, Edmonds, Hooe, Ireland, Lindsay, Lomax, Payne, and Winter families.
