Papers of a noted agricultural economist who was a professor at the University of Wisconsin, 1908-1919; chief of the United States Bureau of Agricultural Economics, 1922-1925; director of a comprehensive survey of rural Vermont, 1928-1931; U.S. delegate to the International Institute of Agriculture, 1933-1935; director of the Farm Foundation, 1935-1945; and author of numerous books and articles on agricultural economics. The collection includes extensive professional correspondence, subject files, and drafts and supplementary research material related to his writing. Personal and biographical files include notes about courses taken under Professor Richard T. Ely; papers relating to the construction and sale of Taylor's home in Virginia which was designed by George Keck; and some files relating to the professional career of his wife, Anne Dewees Taylor. Papers of Hopkins, a professor of agricultural journalism at the University of Wisconsin, including numerous articles and subject files, some correspondence, and photographs; primarily concerning the history of the state's livestock and of its agricultural journalism; the first Soo Line Livestock Special train, which Hopkins organized; the campus landscape architecture, memorials, and landmarks; some historical information on Shorewood Hills; articles on Agricultural School Dean Harry Russell; and the history of Empire Prairie in southern Columbia County--the land and its early settlers, its centennial celebration in 1957, and the land purchase and establishment of the main UW Experimental Farm in the area about 1955.

Catlin, Isaac Swartwood, 1835-1916. Isaac Swartwood Catlin letters, 1908-1909.

Title: Isaac Swartwood Catlin letters, 1908-1909.

Two letters to Henry E. Kingman, one dated Aug. 8, 1908 and the other from the same period but undated, expressing Catlin's indignation at the small sum of money raised by his parish for its rector, who is retiring after 40 years of service there. Also, one letter (in two physical parts) to Prof. H.L. Russell, principal of Owego Academy, dated June 19, 1909, expressing Catlin's regrets that he cannot attend the academy's Class Day, but giving his instructions as to what the Professor should tell the students. At the end of this letter, Catlin signs himself as Brigadier General, NSA, and Brevet Major General.
