Title: George Madison papers, 1780-1816.

This collection contains official letters and other papers of George Madison, later Governor of Kentucky, when he served as Auditor of Public Accounts for the Commonwealth from 1796 to 1816. These papers largely consist of numerous letters, transfers, deeds, and other records filed or sent from citizens to Madison as auditor concerning taxes and land claims. One letter by Madison, also in reference to a land transfer, is included. One small series of letters relates to lands surveyed by Abraham Hite, a land agent. The collection also holds a volume of "Certificates for Military services performed in 1787 & c. under the laws of Virginia. George Madison, Auditor of Public Accounts, Sept. 1, 1800." The book lists date of each entry, along with the names of soldiers and original holders of certificates, tribes of Indians fought, commander of expeditions and the amount paid. An index to the certificates was published in the REGISTER OF THE KENTUCKY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, volume 22 (1924), pp. 2-20.

Hardin, John J., 1810-1847. Hardin family papers, 1733-1943.

Title: Hardin family papers, 1733-1943.

Letters, diaries, account books, order books, muster rolls, and other papers related to the careers of several members of the Hardin family as lawyers, soldiers, real estate investors, and politicians, primarily in Kentucky (ca. 1786-1830) and Illinois (ca. 1831-1923), and to family relationships and roles of women. Early papers deal with property holdings, John Hardin's quartermaster's account book (1777-1779) during the Revolution, and the Spanish and American Indian opposition in Kentucky (1793-1794). Correspondents include Thomas Jefferson, Edmund Randolph, Anthony Wayne, and Henry Knox. Martin D. Hardin's papers concern his law practice at Frankfort (ca. 1800-1823), politics, and militia in the War of 1812. Correspondents included Henry Clay, Abraham Hite, James Morrison, and Charles A. Wickliffe. John J. Hardin's papers relate to the courtship of Sarah Ellen Smith; his law practice with partner, David A. Smith; Illinois politics and government, the Whig Party and post office patronage; the Black Hawk War, 1832 (including muster rolls and general orders); the Mexican War, 1845-1848 (raising of Illinois troops; Hardin's service with 1st Illinois Infantry and disputes with General John E. Wool); and the Mormon troubles, 1844-1845 (negotiations over the Mormon evacuation of Nauvoo, including Brigham Young letters). Incoming letters include frequent references to Stephen A. Douglas, and occasional ones to Abraham Lincoln and John Wentworth. Later papers and writings of Martin D. Hardin (1837-1923) and his sister, Ellen Hardin Walworth, discuss his life (including the Blake Expedition to Oregon in 1860), the 41st Pennsylvania Infantry during the Civil War; and genealogy and family history.

Correspondence letterbooks, daybooks, ledgers and miscellaneous items relating to the operation of a mercantile business in Falmouth (King George County) and Winchester, Virginia by William and David Allason. The correspondence reflects the various aspects of extensive mercantile endeavor, as well as personal relationships between family members and friends. Allason corresponded with Lord Dunmore before and after Dunmore fled Virginia, and he maintained a close association with Lord Fairfax, acting as his factor, buying and selling his slaves and engaging people to collect quitrents for the Fairfax proprietary. Other correspondents include Alexander Baine, Robert Beverley, Nathaniel and Robert Burwell, Charles and Landon Carter, John Harvey, Abraham Hite, Neil Jamieson, Charles Marshall, James Mercer, General Daniel Morgan, Hugh Nelson, Mann Page, Robert Rose, David Ross, Andrew Sprowle, Col. John Taylor, Benamin Waller, John and Warriner Washington, Ralph Wormeley, George Wythe and Isaac Zane. Records identifed as Allason's during his service as agent for Baird and Walker include: daybook for a concern belonging to Baird and Walker, 1759-1769; ledger of sundry goods, 1757-1762; ledger for cargo, 1759; and ledger, 1751-1752. Other volumes include: daybooks, 1761-1800; ledgers, 1760-1801; cash sales, 1764-1782; invoice and inventory books, 1760-1796' balances due, 1766-1792; memorandum books, 1757-1800; and tobacco books 1757-1763, 1786-1804. Account books of the Shenandoah store operated by David Allason include: day book, 1761-1763; and ledgers, 1761-1763. Records of his operation of the Falmouth Store include: daybooks,1775-1777, 1786-1804; and ledgers, 1783-1801. Other volumes include: daybook and journal of private transaction, 1757-1769; daybook of Pine Forest Sawmill, 1787-1793; record of planks saved, 1787-1789; transaction at River Run mill, 1786-1787; and transaction for William Kirk's estate, 1781-1786.
