American clergyman and poet.
Distinguished Episcopal clergyman, rector of the Church of the Holy Communion, New York City, 1846-1877. His hymn "I would not live alone" is widely known.
William Augustus Muhlenberg was an evangelical clergyman in the Episcopal Church, known for his innovative and influential education theories. Born into a prominent Philadelphia family, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, and was ordained in the church. He held several ecclesiastical posts, first in Lancaster, and later in New York. While rector of St. George's in Flushing, Long Island, he founded St. Paul's College; although financial woes caused the school to close, it served as a template for later institutions such as the Groton School. He also founded St. Luke's hospital in New York City, and a philanthropic community on Long Island Sound.
Charles Nicoll Bancker was a merchant and financier.
Matthew Clarkson (1758-1825) was an American military officer during the American Revolution and lived in New York City. Matthew Clarkson, Jr. (1796-1883) was a resident of Flatbush. Charles P. McIlvaine (1799-1873) was rector of St. Ann's Church in Brooklyn from 1827 to 1833. William A. Muhlenberg (1796-1877) was an Episcopal minister in Flushing and New York City. Cyrus Bull was secretary of St. Ann's Church.

Henry Muhlenberg's notebooks (1784-1813), written in Latin or German script, in a small hand, includes a wealth of botanical observations, with a focus on Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Henry Muhlenberg journals are a record of daily occurrences, with many features of a commonplace book, containing prescriptions, notes of questions asked candidates for the Lutheran ministry, and the plan of a barn. There is also a biographical account of Rev. Henry Melchior Muhlenberg (1711-1787).

Kerfoot, J. B. (John Barrett), 1816-1881. John Barrett Kerfoot papers, 1839-1886.
Title:
John Barrett Kerfoot papers, 1839-1886.
This large collection spans virtually the whole of Kerfoot's ecclesiastical career and includes references to almost every issue and important event in the Episcopal Church during the period. The collection includes official papers, documents, reports, circulars, copies of sermons and addresses, but consists chiefly of voluminous and intimate correspondence with Kerfoot's mentor, collaborator and close friend, Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham. A great deal of material concerns Kerfoot's activities in education: his years as head of the College of St. James in Hagerstown, 1842-1864; as President of Trinity College, Hartford, Conn., 1864-1866; and interest in educational enterprises elsewhere, such as the work of the Reverend William Augustus Muhlenberg in New York; progress of the General Theological Seminary there; and Kerfoot's later efforts in education as Bishop of Pittsburgh. Substantial letters deal with the Civil War period: troubles and military events in Maryland, especially in Washington County; difficulties which caused the closing of the College of St. James; and Whittingham's ordeals as an activist for the Union. Papers from Kerfoot's episcopate, beginning in 1866, deal with affairs of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and of the Episcopal Church in general. They include correspondence and reports on episcopal services Kerfoot performed in Maryland and the District of Columbia in 1867 and 1869-1870. Others concern relations with the Church of England and events in England, the Lambeth Conferences of 1867 and 1875-1876, views on the Tractarian movement, ritualism, etc. Some deal with work of the Mexican Commission of the House of Bishops, relations with the Church of Jesus in Mexico, and consecration of Henry C. Riley as Bishop of the Valley of Mexico, 1874-1879. A vast number of other subjects are mentioned in Kerfoot's papers, all of which are segregated for research but many of which have not yet been indexed. The papers also include many references to family events and members, including Mrs. John B. Kerfoot, the Reverend Abel A. Kerfoot, the Reverend Richard T. Kerfoot, and Samuel H. Kerfoot. The collection also contains the original manuscript of Hall Harrison's 1886 biography of the Bishop Kerfoot.

Bloomfield, Isabella Macomb. Families of Philadelphia papers, 1700-1942 [manuscript]
Title:
Families of Philadelphia papers, 1700-1942 [manuscript]
The collection primarily consists of the correspondence and papers of members of twelve different families in the Philadelphia area. A great deal of the correspondence relates to concern for health and relationships among family members. The papers are often concerned with matters of business as well as estates, both in terms of the exchange of property, but also as property and possessions of deceased family members. Many of the principals in the collection traveled for business or pleasure. As some of the families or family members were Quaker, issues such as attendance at meetings and the conduct of business are also discussed. There are some photographs and other images. Families include: Bloomfield, Coates, Cresson, Emlen, Gumbes, Hornor, Howell, Lloyd, Macomb, Moore, Ramsay, Vaux, and Wetherill. There are many correspondents in this collection. Among the most prolific and/or significant are: Isabella Macomb Bloomfield, Joseph Bloomfield (1753-1823), Benjamin Coates (1808-87), Benjamin Hornor Coates (1797-1881), George M. Bancker, Charles Nicoll, 1778-1869. Family papers, ca.1733-1894.
Title:
Family papers, ca.1733-1894.
This collection was assembled in three major accessions, one being a group, 1791-1864, containing letters to and from Bancker and other members of his family on education, business, and personal topics, with such correspondents as Samuel Hazard, H.M. McIlvaine, James C. Montgomery, and John T. Montgomery (2 boxes). The bulk of the collection was received after 1966 and is more diverse, with more correspondence both earlier and later among family members; and also with many "extraneous" letters from prominent Americans. Many of thse letters are addressed to Frederick Beasley of the University of Pennsylvania.

Charles Nicoll Bancker family papers, 1733-1894, 1733-1894
Title:
Charles Nicoll Bancker family papers, 1733-1894 1733-1894
In addition to correspondence, the collection contains various documents, such as a furniture inventory volume (30pp.); a Daybook, 1795-1800 (120pp.); and a very interesting journal (unidentified, but by one of the Banckers, and filed under "Description of a trip..."), from New York to Albany and back, between July 20-Aug. 15, 1793 (1 vol., 31 pp.). It contains detailed observations of the Hudson River and the towns along the way. C.N. Bancker was in business and trade prior to 1826, and in the insurance business after that date, so there is material relating to those topics in this collection. He owned a substantial library of the period, which was used by Charles Wilkes's Expedition after 1837 (see Reynell Coates to Bancker). This library, along with Bancker's notable scientific instrument collection, was sold after his death and there are published auction catalogues in the collection. There is much family correspondence from: Anne E. Bancker, Charles Gerard Bancker, Evert Bancker, Sarah U. Bancker, Violetta Bancker Talbot, Elizabeth Bancker Teackle, and John Teackle.
