Rutherfurd family. Rutherfurd family papers, 1721-1879.

Title: Rutherfurd family papers, 1721-1879.

Papers, 1721-1879 (bulk 1765-1840), consisting of correspondence, legal papers, deeds and land patents, record and account books, and miscellaneous papers. The material concerns members of the Rutherfurd, Alexander, and Reid families, who were related by marriage; the largest groups of material relate to James Alexander, William Alexander (Lord Stirling), Walter Rutherfurd, and John Rutherfurd. There are also papers of mary Rutherfurd, in her capacity as executrix of John Rutherfurd's will. Much of the material has to do with the families' land holdings; members of all three families held shares in the Propriety of the Eastern Division of New Jersey, and in the Second Nine Partners Tract in New York. It includes surveys (including a volume of surveys of the Ramapo Tract in New Jersey dated 1767), rent rolls, memoranda about farms and tracts, legal papers, conveyances, and receipts (many for rents), as well as correspondence. There is a large group of letters relating to General John Reid's attempts to retain ownership of his American properties, which were under threat of confiscation because of his service in the British Army during the Revolution, including some from his daughter, Susanna Robertson; there is also material related to the settlement of his estate. There is another large group of letters from Judge Robert Morris, of New Jersey, and numerous letters from William Wilson of Clermont, which deal with Rutherfurd tenants in Little Nine Partners. Other people who wrote letters to members of the families include Cadwallader Colden, Lewis Morris, Robert Hunter Morris, and Thomas Penn. There is some material relating to the French and Indian War: Walter Rutherfurd's accounts for the 4th Battalion, 60th Royal American Regiment, and a list of provisions for the Niagara Expedition, probably created for William Alexander ca. 1759. Other papers include the will, dated July 28, 1715, of Governor Robert Hunter.

This collection consists of the papers of the Boggs family, as well as the allied Blauvelt, Kearny and Lawrence families. The materials range in date from 1737 to 1950, and include correspondence; composition notebooks; diaries; estate, financial and legal papers; genealogies; and musical scores. Also included in the collection are estate papers for various individuals, Robert Hunter Morris, Robert Morris, (ca. 1745-1815) and Michael Kearny (1725-1797), that were maintained by Robert Boggs (1766-1831) in his duties as executor and attorney in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Harison, Richard. Letterbooks and catalog, 1790-1835.

Title: Letterbooks and catalog, 1790-1835.

Four letterbooks belonging to Harison and a catalog of his library (1790-1835). Letterbook for 1790-1800 contains mostly copies of letters to Cabinet members and other government officials with reference to his work as U.S. attorney for the district of N.Y., giving and seeking opinions on legal problems of the new federal government. The remaining volumes consist mostly of matters relating to his own and his clients' land holdings and also correspondence from his work as a private attorney. After Harison's death in 1829, the last letterbook was used by the executors and trustees of his estate, primarily his son William H. Harison. The library catalog (ca. 1796) gives the name of the book, author, number of volumes, and size, listed alphabetically.

William Livingston papers, 1749-1782

Title: William Livingston papers 1749-1782

William Livingston (1723-1790), a lawyer, was the first governor of New Jersey. After practicing law in New York, he was a member of the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1776 and also a brigadier general in the New Jersey militia. He served as governor of New Jersey from 1776 to 1790 and in 1787 was a delegate to the Federal Constitutional Convention. Collection consists of correspondence and other papers of Livingston. Correspondence, 1775-1782, includes incoming letters and documents from constituents, colleagues, and political and social figures; Livingston's letters to the New Jersey Gazette on events of the American Revolution; and letterbooks kept by Livingston as governor of New Jersey containing drafts of official letters, family letters, messages to the New Jersey Assembly, and narrative of the war by Jonathan Trumbull. Also, cost books of cases, 1749-1772, in which Livingston acted as counsel before the Supreme Court of New York.

Letters, manuscripts, documents, and letterbooks of Jay and of many members of his family. The letters touch on every aspect of American life and government of the period, and contain correspondence from such prominent individuals as John Adams, George Clinton, James Duane, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Rufus King, John Paul Jones, Marquis de Lafayette, Robert B. Livingston, William Livingston, Gouverneur Morris, Robert Morris, Edmund Randolph, Philip Schuyler, and George Washington. There are approximately 500 letters from Jay, primarily drafts of correspondence to the persons listed above, as well as his correspondence as Secretary of Foreign Affairs, 1784-1789. The manuscripts and documents include many reports, commissions, and diplomas, as well as a draft copy of THE FEDERALIST Number 5 and Jay's oath of office as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court; also included are manumission documents, and a group of documents from Trinity Church, where his father was a vestryman from 1715 to 1785. The collection includes copies of Jay's letter book as Secretary of State, 10 Oct. 1788-25 Dec. 1792, and of four letters from John Armstrong, 19 June-27 Dec. 1810; and a copy of the pair of silverplated candlesticks from the Treaty of Paris, 3 Sept. 1783, reproduced by the Smithsonian Institution.

Title: Rutherfurd Family Papers 1721-1879

The Rutherfurd Family Papers is one of four discrete but closely related collections, known together as the Alexander-Stuyvesant-Rutherfurd Collections. The Rutherfurd Family Papers contain material created by or pertaining to members of the Rutherfurd and Alexander families of New York City and New Jersey, and the Reid family of New York City and Great Britain. The collection is arranged into series for each of the members of the respective families represented in the collection. The principal subseries within each of these series are: Correspondence; Legal Papers; Accounts, Bills, Receipts; and Surveys.

These selected papers of William Alexander, spanning the years 1767 to 1782 (with a gap between late December 1779 to June 1781), consist of correspondence sent and received, military orders and reports, and bulletins to the Continental Congress. The earliest documents relate Lord Stirling's early commercial dealings, but the bulk of the papers chronicle his activities during the American Revolution. Alexander's baptism by fire emerges from the records of numerous campaigns and conflicts; the Battles of Long Island and Trenton in 1776, and of Brandywine the following year are well documented. Also covered in the Alexander Papers are civil and military affairs in New Jersey; military intelligence and troop movements in New Jersey and the Hudson Highlands; communication with enemy forces; and various matters of army administration. Alexander's frontier command is particularly well documented. Notable correspondents include the most of the military and political leaders of the new state and national governments, as well as prominent merchants in New York and New Jersey. Exemplifying the caliber of the material is a report dated June 12, 1781, from General Washington to a board of general officers at New Windsor. In this signed document, Washington outlines plans for a Franco-American assault on New York and requests advice on seven specific points from his officer corps. Items have each been inlaid into two folio volumes. The papers are extensively described in Sotheby's catalog "The Library of H. Bradley Martin, Highly Important Printed and Manuscript Americana: Auction Wednesday, January 31, 1990" (Lots 2506-2553) and are available to researchers on microfilm. Additional manuscripts relating to William Alexander can be found in the extensive Alexander Papers and the Rutherfurd Papers as well as in other gatherings of William Alexander's own correspondence, in The New-York Historical Society Manuscripts Department.
