Cyrus Adler Papers

Title: Cyrus Adler Papers

Cyrus Adler was a prominent Jewish scholar and communal builder. Born in 1863, he had a tremendous role in shaping much of Jewish America by the time of his death in 1940. The collection contains Dr. Adler's business correspondence and personal papers and spans much of his multi-faceted career. It also contains many papers connected to the formation and day-to-day business of the Dropsie College for Hebrew and Cognate Learning.

Mayer Sulzberger Collection

Title: Mayer Sulzberger Collection

The Sulzberger collection spans the years 1857 to 1923. The bulk of the collection is concentrated after 1900, although there is a fair amount of legal and personal material dating from the nineteenth century. The collection provides access to several of the vast networks of relationships and projects, both Jewish and non-Jewish, in which Sulzberger was involved during his life-time, including important documents relating to the bequest of Moses Aaron Dropsie and the founding of Dropsie College. One particular item of interest is an undated petition addressed to Governor Pennypacker (including an appended autographic treasure) to appoint Judge Sulzberger to the (Pennsylvania?) Supreme Court. Unfortunately, the collection contains numerous gaps in the documentation of Sulzberger's life; study of this collection will provide only the beginnings of a comprehensive portrait. See the bibliography, below, for additional primary sources and comments for future research). Of particular note is the range of well-known personalities and organizations represented in the correspondence series. Sulzberger maintained an ongoing interest in and involvement with the burgeoning movement of historical Judaism in America (which later crystallized as Conservative Judaism) and corresponded with many of the movement's leading figures such as Cyrus Adler, Louis Ginzberg, Alexander Marx, Solomon Solis-Cohen, and Israel Friedlander, whose letters regularly appear throughout the series. Also noteworthy is Sulzberger's ample correspondence with the Jewish Theological Seminary's second president, Solomon Schechter, published in part by Meir Ben Horin (see bibliography.) Of potential interest is the American Jewish Committee series, which contains correspondence, clippings, and other documents relating to the condition of Jewish communities around the world, and the AJC's work to lobby the U.S. government on their behalf. Primary sources may be found, for example, which deal with the hotly debated Russian Passport Question concerning the prohibition of those American Jewish citizens who came originally from Russia from freely traveling there; the persecution of Jews in Kishineff, and other reported outbreaks of anti-Jewish violence in Eastern Europe; the consequent calls to abrogate the 1832 Treaty of Commerce and Navigation between the U.S. and Russia. Of interest to scholars of the early Zionist period are several reports sent to Sulzberger by Israel Zangwill, the leader of the Jewish Territorial Organization, a group which had proposed the re-settlement of Jews in East Africa and had consequently dispatched several surveys of the region to determine their suitability. In addition, Sulzberger was consulted on the formation of a Jewish Institute of Technology, (what would become the Technion), a school of advanced engineering planned for Haifa. He also received dispatches from the Provisional Executive Committee of General Zionist Affairs, including a copy of the famous dispatch of Lord Arthur Balfour pledging England's support for "the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine (November 2, 1917)." Of great usefulness for reconstructing a bibliography of Sulzberger's literary efforts is the extensive group of drafts and notes, both handwritten and in typescript, of published and unpublished addresses, occasional lectures, essays and monographs composed by Sulzberger. Several copies, in typescript form, of Sulzberger's published scholarship are to be found, including that of his The Am ha-aretz (1910), The Ancient Hebrew Law of Homicide (1912), The Polity of Ancient Israel (1915), and The Status of Labor in Ancient Israel (published posthumously in 1923). In addition, a published copy of each of these works has been incorporated in the collection. Sulzberger was an avid, perhaps America's unequaled private collector of rare Hebrew books, manuscripts, and artifacts. Contained in the collection are detailed ledgers listing accessions to his library and related acquisitions. Of particular note in this regard is the extensive correspondence Sulzberger maintained with Alexander Marx (which was recently edited, annotated and published -- see bibliography, Dicker, 1991, below), found in the correspondence series, which documents Sulzberger's foresight and faithful support of the creation of the Jewish Theological Seminary's library. Researchers of nineteenth century American legal and commercial history may profit from an examination of the legal series which contains records relating to Sulzberger's legal work, the business ventures and interests he often represented, or those in which his family was involved. For example there is a fair amount of material relating to an inventor named Kitsee, and his company, the Mine Safety Company. Sulzberger represented Kitsee and apparently at one time purchased a controlling share of the company. Of related interest to the social and economic historian are the family series and financial series which contain numerous records documenting various Sulzberger businesses and expenditures, particularly during the nineteenth century.

Approximately half of this material, which forms a part of the Jewish Theological Seminary's General Files, consists of Ginzberg's correspondence, 1904-1951. This correspondence concerns Seminary administrative and academic matters, Ginzberg's scholarly work (including the publication of three volumes of his "Commentary on the Talmud of Jerusalem," 1941), questions about Jewish law, and personal matters. Included are Ginzberg's letters to Solomon Schechter, Cyrus Adler, and Louis Finkelstein (the three Seminary presidents under whom he served); to colleagues both within and outside the Seminary; students; publishers; and others. The rest of the material consists of a small group of typescripts of writings, ca.1910s-1950s, and papers documenting. Birthday celebration and other honors, his funeral, and memorial services. Included among the writings are Ginzberg's memorial adresses for Rabbi David Hoffman (1922), Cyrus Adler (1940), and Alexander Marx (1953); a group of Talmud lectures, 1941-1942; and other speeches, lectures, and articles. Of note is a published copy of Ginzberg's World War Two era "Prayer for Divine Aid."

The General Files of the Jewish Theological Seminary, which served as the Seminary's central filing system, consist principally of the correspondence of the president/chancellor (the title changed from president to chancellor in 1951). Some correspondence of vice-chancellors and other. top administrators is also included. Since the bulk of this material dates from 1940-1972, the years Dr. Louis Finkelstein (1895-1992), headed the Seminary, the General Files chiefly document his administration. There is, though, a significant amount of material from the 1930s, some from the 1920s, and a scattering going back to 1902. These earlier files cover, if thinly, the administrations of Solomon Schechter and Cyrus Adler. Records dating from the Seminary's founding in 1886 until its reorganization in 1902 have not been found in these files. Material in the General Files is mainly correspondence, both letters received and carbons of outgoing letters. The files also contain a variety of other types of documents, such as: minutes, reports, press releases, texts of speeches and lectures, clippings, reprints of articles, programs, invitations, guest lists, photographs, and audio tapes. Correspondents include: members of the Seminary's boards of directors and overseers; faculty members, administrators, students, and staff; administrators of institutions and programs affiliated with the Seminary (such as the American Jewish History Center, the "Eternal Light" radio program, the Jewish Museum, the Schocken Institute for Jewish Research, and the University of Judaism); participants in the Conference on Science, Philosophy, and Religion and the Institute for Religious and Social Studies; recipients of honorary degrees; rabbis; clergypeople of other faiths; Dr. Finkelstein's academic colleagues; contributors to his book "The Jews: Their History, Culture, and Religion" (published between 1949 and 1971); representatives of many Jewish communal, religious, cultural, educational, and political organizations; politicians and other public figures; Israeli government officials; administrators of neighboring academic institutions on Morningside Heights, particularly Columbia University; community organizations, particularly Morningside Heights, Inc.; and an occasional member of the public writing to ask a question about Jewish law or custom. These files document Seminary administrative and academic matters, and during Louis Finkelstein's administration they also reflect his role as a prominent American Jew, one who was occasionally called upon to act as a spokesman or representative of American Jews as a whole. Dr. Finkelstein's work as an author and editor, particularly the preparation of his "The Jews..." is documented here. Of particular note are extensive (in some years making up approximately one quarter of the General Files) files documenting the Institute for Religious and Social Studies and the Conference on Science, Philosophy and Religion - programs fostering intergroup relations founded at the Seminary in 1938 and 1940, respectively. Included is correspondence with participants and with people invited to participate. Copies of Conference papers and transcripts of Institute talks are also included. Participants in the Conference and Institute were often prominent people from a wide ran. ge of fields. As a result, there are letters here from W.H. Auden, Mary McLeod Bethune, Franz Boas, Van Wyck Brooks, T.S. Eliot, Nels Ferre, Aldous Huxley, Jacques Lipchitz, Alain Locke, Thomas Mann, Margaret Mead, Reinhold Niebuhr, I.I. Rabi, Bertrand Russell, Bayard Rustin, Delmore Schwartz, Ben Shahn, Harlow Shapley, Paul Tillich, and many others. Also of note is correspondence with Frieda Schiff Warburg, daughter of Jacob Schiff and a Seminary board member. From 1944, when she donated her Fifth Avenue house to the Seminary for use as the Jewish Museum, until her death in 1958, the files contain her correspondence with Louis Finkelstein and other Seminary administrators, notably Jessica Feingold. This correspondence provides a view into the donation of the Warburg house and its transformation into the Jewish Museum.

The faculty files, 1903-1949 (the bulk dates from the 1930s-1940s) are a small group of files which mainly contain correspondence by or about members of the faculty of the Jewish Theological Seminary. Faculty members represented include: Max Arzt, Boaz Cohen, H.L. Ginsberg, Robert Gordis, Simon Greenberg, Abraham S. Halkin, Moses Hyamson, Mordecai Kaplan, Saul Lieberman, Alexander Marx, Alexander Sperber, Shalom Spiegel, speech teacher Arleigh Williamson, and others. Some correspondence is between faculty members and Seminary presidents Solomon Schechter, Cyrus Adler, and Louis Finkelstein. Files consist mainly of correspondence, but class attendance records, lists of grades, student recommendations, entrance examinations, schedules, press releases announcing the arrival of new faculty members, lecture notes, course outlines, typescripts of papers, and other materials documenting classroom, academic, and administrative activities are also included. Of note are application forms for some faculty members who had been students at the Seminary. Also of note is material documenting immigration work done for foreign born faculty. Of particular interest are the files of Arleigh Williamson, a speech teacher from New York University, who kept notes on the speech habits, social presentation, and "cultural level" of his mainly European born students.
