Epithet: MD; of Sloane MS 2039
Epithet: of Add MS 44488
John Woodward was born in Marshalltown, Iowa on February 18, 1915 and moved with his family to Seattle, Wash. in 1927. He learned to ski at a young age with the Boy Scouts and was involved in R.O.T.C. at the University of Washington. Woodward joined the Army in 1940 as a 1st Lieutenant and began his military service at Fort Lewis, Wash. before transferring to Camp Hale, Colo. Initially assigned to the 41st Infantry Division Ski Patrol and later with the 3rd Infantry Ski Division, he subsequently served with Company B of the 87th Infantry Regiment; 10th Mountain Division Reconnaissance Troop and the 3rd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment Headquarters before joining the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment Headquarters. He was also stationed at Camp Swift, Tex. before being sent to Italy. Woodward was awarded two Bronze Star medals for his service at Castel D'Aiano in March 4-8, 1945 and at S. Benedetto near the Po River on April 23, 1945. He achieved the rank of Major.
Epithet: MD; of Stowe MS 1026
Born in Iowa in 1915 and moved to Seattle in 1927. Learned to ski at a young age with the Boy Scouts. Involved in ROTC at the University of Washington and entered the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1940. Awarded the Bronze Star at Castel D'Aiano (March 4-8, 1945) and a Bronze Star at S. Benedetto Po (April 23, 1945). His principle unit was the 87th Infantry, Headquarters 1st.
John Woodward was a farmer in Groton, Mass., during the middle decades of the nineteenth century. Although little is known of his life, it appears that Woodward was born in nearby Tyngsboro on March 7, 1813, and that he married twice: first to Rebecca Sawtelle of Groton in 1823 and second to Mary Jane Nutting -- almost 30 years his junior -- in Dec. 1866. With Mary Jane, at least, he was highly reproductive, fathering his first son, a seventh child, at the age of 66. Woodward died in Groton on Apr. 20, 1895, and was buried in his family's ancestral home of Dunstable.

Roberts, A. W. (Abishai W.). A.W. Roberts family papers, 1837-1916 (bulk 1866-1878).
Title:
A.W. Roberts family papers, 1837-1916 (bulk 1866-1878).
The collection contains legal papers, receipts, a license to practice law signed by the Louisiana Bar Association (1857), papers concerning court cases, and personal and business correspondence of Abishai W. Roberts. Letters from Roberts during the Civil War include one written from Johnson Island Prison (1864). Many post Civil War letters were written to and from Lucy Roberts (née Smith) and concern personal matters. Papers dating before 1860 are principally those of John S. Woodward and Aurelia Woodward and include receipts, deeds, and mortgages, some showing the Woodwards' ownership of the San Socie Hotel in Pass Christian, Mississippi. A few letters of Lucy and Josephine Smith were written from boarding schools in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and New Orleans.

Title:
John Woodward Account Book 1838-1868
John Woodward's accounts document the financial transactions of fairly typical farmer in Groton over the period of three decades. Raising an array of produce, from cranberries and chestnuts, to squash, barley, apples, and turnips, Woodward also raised poultry and a variety of livestock. The ledger documents the day to day exchanges of food and labor that comprised the core of the local economy. Noteworthy among his customers are locally prominent families such as Blood and Swett and at least two Nuttings.
